China's Population Crisis

China in history has experience bachelor societies before. This is the typical scare-mongering propaganda from those that look at the ugly sides of their own cultures and what would happen if they experienced this.
Can you tell me when? In what period? I'm not doubting you, but I'm unfamiliar with this.

chinese men should hate mao, and i hate mao too. him and his ignorance led to a bunch of our women in foreign soil with foreign men, and also the same time led to some of those adopted baby girls now hating/forgot/abandoned their heritage. all because mao and his ignorance. of course the same time now there's an inbalance of gender ratio in china. i won't blame those baby girls, but mao, heartless parents, and his stupid policies. this guy and his ignorance led to so much deaths, backwardness, and decay in the civilization, culture, society that no one knows if china will ever recover completely from his retardedness.

I don't think Mao is actually at fault with regards to the Gender Disparity he never went along with the need for population control.

China under Mao (49-75) adhered to Gender equality and tampet down on gender discrimination.

After his death when the party started to moderate its policy it relaxed its position on Gender equality which coincided with the emergence of the Environmental movement, and the need for population control.

Reduced gender protection and a need for development, and population stabilization/reduction cost the Girls severely.

I took a college course that talked about it. Looking for my college book for specific info. It wasn't an imbalance in the whole population. These were clusters within China. The point of the media reporting this is a part of the "Yellow Peril" racist propaganda to scare others into thinking China's future is going to be filled with aggressive sex-starved men that are going rape white women. The West should know well of the bachelor society since it was forced upon Chinese immigrant coolie laborers in the 19th and early 20th centuries throughout the West. They didn't want the Chinese to breed so they outlawed Chinese female immigration. So if the West wants an example of what happens in a Chinese bachelor society, they only have to look at their own history. And we know the Chinese coolie immigrant in the West was not prone to violent behavior or raping white women. In fact a little tidbit of the history of San Francisco's Chinatown was that women fleeing abusive husbands were known to hide in Chinatown at the time. Ironic when it comes to who was more violent, it wasn't the Chinese.

..... i have a question: if the baby boomers died out, will the gender ratio make a rebound? this is assuming generation from the 80's on are around 1:1

Yes, it could make a rebound. The problem is, if I'm not wrong, the gender ratio has never once reached 1:1 for all the generations since the 1980s. Anyway, there would be an improvement, too, after a number of generations, if the gender ratio on the whole moves toward 1:1 for those generations.

I do believe there are (or will be) serious problems if the one-child policy continues as it traditionally has been. One of the most pressing would be a point where you would have a high number of old people and relatively few young workers. This is what plagues many western countries, but alas they are a bit better equipped to handle the problem. China still has so many other pressing issues to allocate resources into, if not also having to handle this ageing crisis.

Still, I have complete confidence in that the Chinese government is well aware of these problems, and as soon as the rationale for the one-child policy is seen as less of a problem than ageing population, unfavourable sex ratios etc. the one-child policy will drastically change or disappear.

Already I read that the policy will be slackened substantially in Shanghai. Also, certain measures have been taken on the countryside to alleviate some of the most serious problems (families allowed two children if the first is a girl). And as always, the minorities are allowed to stay outside the policy. It will sort itself out, gentlemen. Have faith. The Chinese authorities aren't ideological idiots.

the difference between China and other aging societies like say Japan...is that Chinese ppl are still quite keen in having multiple kids. so once the regulation is gone do expect the population growth the accelerate, whereas in Japan, women arent even gettin married anymore...

so its all about finding the right time and set the right policies...i'll leave the details to the social scientists in China to worry about.

Omg that is so true, an interesting point worth thinking about!
When I went back to China about four years back with my parents and my little sister all the former classmates and uni mates of mum and dad were like "wow you're so lucky, so xing fu - you have TWO kids!!" (me being born in the prc and sister out of prc)

If the one child policy is removed then we will see the population rebound I think, but it will take a generation to get a whole new, larger working class to support the growing elderlies.. It's a matter of timing I suppose.

Is it me or Chinese expatriates are a lot more bigoted than I originally thought?
I think the whole "women marrying foreign men" thing is more testy because of reminders of foreign domination (i.e; women marrying rich foreign dude for his cash, but also for their personalities and western cultures, which they find more attractive and "hip"/"cool" than some Chinese ones - can't judge taste), or is racial domination a better word?
Wasn't there a thread a while back which had this subject?

As for the chinese men marrying women of other races - well i'm not complaining, there are a lot of fish in the sea :p (jj)
I personally think the latter thorn is far smaller in Chinese minds than the former, but we're starting to see some chinese men getting relationships with caucasian women as a trend...

Actually to have a larger population is one thing... to be able to provide for this population is another. Of course aging population is one thing... but if the one child policy is removed totally, you will see a population explosion... and could China's current infrastructure, medical service, education service, social developement and economic match this sudden grow.

I would say that China needed to remove the one child policy but perhaps introduce two or three child policy... that would do... instead of leaving it in the hand of the people and you will see one family suddenly having five to six kids.
