Anyone been to Mr. Chow's or PF Chang?

I've been to PF Chang's. I am more impressed with the Tang dynasty horse statue they put in the front.

No clue what Mr. Chow's is though...

Tea eggs? I must say, being a Southerner, we have always thought that was a Taiwan only sort of snack.

probably brought to TW by Northerners during the "great retreat"...:D

Dam, now that I think of it, all the good Chinese food here are Cantonese. All the other cuisines are rare, expensive, and/or not that good...

Where are you located? Cantonese food is the most common Chinese food you find in the States. I think you can only find other cuisines in big cities, like NYC, SF, LA and Houston.

My fellow Northerners, I have a question (one I probably should not ask as a Northerner :(). What is the difference between Da3lu3mian4 and Zha2jiang4mian4? I know they both involve some kind of sauce added to the noodles, but I simply can't tell.

We have a HUGE Chinatown in Houston: about 6 supermarkets, each with its own shopping center, along with thousands of other stores. but we don't have many Asian places outside of Chinatown. Well, let me put it this way: outside of Chinatown, we don't have any Asian places that Asians want to go :D

Whys that, they can't be FOB?:D

To go to Chinatown, we have to pass the most congested area in houston, which itself is usually considered to have the worst traffic congestions in the nation. It's become such a hassle, eating Western food is way more convenient to us.

How many miles do you actually travel. Over here the size of greater Akld is about 55miles by 15 miles and public transports terrible, so it can take hrs, during peak times.

Of course, to my parents, we are just plain lazy since they drive 2 hours each way to go to Chinatown once a month to get their meat, sauces and "exotic" veggies.

Unless you live in a multi story appartment, why don't you grow your own vegies, buy enough sauces to last a siege, and get your meats locally. I can't see any difference between a 'pork belly brought from a regular butcher shop, than from a Chinese owned butchery..

It is funny how you mention the noodles. I just had some zhajiangmian last night. The difference between zhajiangmian and dalumian is that zhajianmian has almost a standard sauce. The standard sauce always have tianmianjiang, the difference between each zhajianmian sauce is that the meat can be different or sometimes spices. Usually it is very very similar. With Da lu mian, the sauce can be different at times, but usually the ingrediants are eggs, those black ear fungus (I have no idea what they are called in English), and random vegetables. Essentially, zhajianmian is a noodle dish that looks like meat+tianmianjiang+noodles, while dalumian sometimes looks like an egg+noodle+vegetable+sometimes meat dish.

Well, the actual distance is not long, about 15 miles. But the traffic is horrible. The I think one time it took us two and half hours to get to Chinatown :(.

Talking about growing our own stuff, we have a house and a big-@$$ yard. But the funny thing is we can't seem to keep any plants alive for too long. When we first bought the house, my wife's uncle sent us 5 fruit trees as gift. We ended to killing all of them within 3 months :(. So our conclusion: don't try to grow anything on our own. In fact, we are waiting for my in-laws to come over. They are the experts...

What have you tried growing except those fruit trees? My family's growing some cong and cabbage in the backyard, and it's doing fine XD

Sumdud:

The Chinese food there is very bad! Cantonese? Where do you go to school now?

It is indeed, mostly fast food-style Chinese food. There's 2 Cantonese/Canadian style, two Northern style, and one Taiwan style. It's enough to fill the stomach I suppose. I swear they make their living all off the location of the restaurants, since there's like 5 student residence buildings infront of it. If they were located 2 blocks down I would never eat there

I'm going to school in U of Waterloo now :)

Heh, did you dig the hole deep enough?

Not too sure about that since that was 6 years ago, but I did followed a manual that came with the plants. The trees were fine for about a month, with new branches and leaves and things, very exciting. Then the Texas summer came with oven-like high temps and month-long draughts... We tried to water them everyday. then they started to look bad. Someone told us not to water too much. We did that too. And about 3 months later, we were down to only one tree and eventually it was gone too.

My mother-in-law planted veggies when she was here a couple years back and they were fine. We had wonderful daily fresh veggies for about a year. After she went back to China, we took over and followed the instructions she left us. And? All the veggies were gone in about a month or so. So our conclusion: we can't farm :(
