Yuan Class AIP & Kilo Submarine Thread

Hard to say exact type but I would guess by the price tag they are adding AIP for sure and also submarine launched cruise missiles

The Thailand deal is like half the price so PN must have added alot of work to these SSK for their own purpose

8 modern SSK with second strike is a powerful package a submarine is a ace up the sleeve of any navy and correctly used can give a carrier strike group a large threat even forcing them to change tactics

A ZDK-03 AWACS with Midas refuelling integrated with a naval JF-17 squadron together with the SSK will give PN a strong deterrence

This air, sea and sub surface force will need a lot of training and work to form a good integrated defence and offensive force but it's a good start

Let's hope we hear some good new for next iteration of F22P frigates this year is a big year

well, this is going for about 500 million each, whereas the Thailand ones are about $350 million each, so definitely not twice the price (assuming that does get signed). It would seem like there are some change + maybe cost of ToT.

Well I think the minute you start talking about a VLS the price takes a hike, The Russian Amur Class has a VLS system and it's not much short of $500 million

Will PN have a VLS? Who knows but if they are looking to have a 650mm torpedo tube to launch the naval Babur cruise missile they will require modification and they might even opt for Western subsystems

This is all speculation I guess we will have to wait for details

Question is how long does it take to launch a SSK from China, 2018 is a scheduled for the first SSK to be delivered, after that they could launch one every year and PN can start launching them simultaneity although at a much slower pace

I think PN will have lots of SSK coming online quickly it will be fantastic to see them

Can Type 041 launch land attack cruise missiles?

Its quite possible. As Yuan (export name "S-20") is a "improved" version of Kilo, it probably has facility for it. What is interesting is that the improved version of Kilo - the Amur class has VLS launch tube which theoretically can launch land attack cruise missile.

As you can see in the image blow, there is room for VLS launch tubes:

I think for China to develop a special class variant of S-20 with VLS to launch from underwater shouldn't be hard - they already have submarine ballistic missile launch capability developed over 30 years ago, and China also have variety of cruise missiles now, they just need to adapt these concepts and put it all into a conventional diesel sub.

There is also the Type 032 which looks like it could launch the missile vertically too:

So the research and design are probably there. I think the Chinese are fairly flexible, if there is the need for it, they will develop it.
