    If the statements below are true, then the next version of the Type-93/95 should be competitive enough against the Virginia/Seawolf.

    That would argue for a large increase in production rate, given that the Chinese Navy does lag behind in submarines and when you compare it to the resources that are being devoted to the surface navy.

    So if the 093A is around 110 db, then it is time to update some charts. Improved LA class is said to be around 105, while Seawolf, Virginia and Astude classes are around 95 db.

    @Interstellar, how far off is the speculation below,

    I appreciate the effort and I don't have any comment as to the projected dates and noise level association projections.

    However I think it would be useful to use the designations of 09III and 09V etc with the PLA standard for Roman numerals when referring PLAN nuclear subs for your chart seeing as you put the effort for making the chart.

    Pentagons 2019 report mentions that Type-093B will be launched 2020-2025 and they classify these new humpback boats as 093A Shang II's (page 36).
    https://media.defense.gov/2019/May/02/2002127082/-1/-1/1/2019_CHINA_MILITARY_POWER_REPORT.pdf

    Original 093 = Shang I

    093A = Shang II

    093B = Shang III?

    Crap! Completely overlooked that. [IMG]

    My mistake. I'll reupload an updated version.

    Check the 'commissioned' dates. 09IIIB doesn't seem to have started according to this post - Post #2141 by Hendrik_2000. I lets assume it starts end of this year, and completed extremely fast.

    09I - commissioned (1974)
    09III - commissioned (2006)
    09IIIA - commissioned (2015)
    09IIIB - ? (Production starts end of 2019?)
    09V - ? (Unknown)

    Updated chart -

    The 091 and 092 retain Arabic numerals. It's only from 09III on that the designation system switched to roman numerals. Other than that, I quite like the graphic.

    Considering we had that article claiming 093 features natural circulation, considering no LA/improved class design uses natural circulation, considering 093a enjoys some 30 years of computer related advances over improved la class, including advances in computer milling machines, precision machinery of high tolerance and various computer aided simulations of propeller shape and cavitation, I really wouldn't be surprised that in a few decades we get articles that 093a was, in fact, quieter than improved la class (as it first appeared) all this time.

    I wonder about something: Is it possible that submarines make more noise in peacetime (when they're not on an intelligence gathering mission) to obfuscate their true wartime stealth? Like how stealth fighters use Luneberg lenses to amplify their RCS.

    The sound emission of a submarine most likely depending on the resonant vibration frequency of component, and that require either increased damping by using multiple , different critical frequency plates, or using mass for damping.

    So, a successful submarine design should take care to separate the submarine components by resonant frequencies, and making sure between the component and the sea there is no single common resonant frequency.

    This should takes lot of theoretical calculation, full scale experiments and so on.
