Some major rumors breaking regarding the 093, 093B, and future submarines. The reason I posted this is because some other reliable observers have been saying the same thing recently.

  • There is no "09IVA" but rather a retrofit of existing 09IV submarines
  • The 09III with the "hump" is actually designated "09IIIA", and serves as an interim (much like the 052B destroyer) between the 09III and the newest 09IIIB
  • The 09IIIB is considered a "new" class of submarines (as corroborated by the CCTV reports of PLAN receiving a new type of submarine) and is rumored to carry six YJ-18 missiles vertically launched
  • 09IIIB may be modified to carry more missiles in the future
  • **Two fourth-generation submarines should be in construction simultaneously**
  • First 4th-generation boat expected to launch in 2020 and serve in 2022
  • All eight 4th-generation boats expected to be delivered by 2025-2030

Are the humped 09III retrofits of earlier 09IIIs?

This could explain the humped subs without the VLS. There are test or transition hulls to a new class of 9III.

New tweet from East Pendulum. China MSA reserving space for tests, two this time, one for certification of a new batch of carrier pilots to be held on the Liaoning, and the other for a new nuclear submarine.

From what I've read:

1. The 09III with small "humps", seen in the recent naval parade, is actually the 09IIIA and serves as a transition between the vanilla 09III and the more advanced 09IIIB
2. 09IIIB is considered a class of its own and likely has VLS according to Henri K. and a few others

Not sure if the 09IIIA are retrofits or new-builds but the so-called "09IVA" are retrofits of existing boats.
So in the end we have 09III, 09IIIA, 09IIIB, and 09IV serving in the PLAN's nuclear-powered fleet.

Is there any difference between the length of the 09III and the 09IIIA? I was thinking they added a new section between two halves of an 9III that included this bump.

I don't think your source is reliable. The person is nothing more than a military enthusiast, as far as I know.

The number of reliable sources (big shrimps) can be counted on a single hand. Please don't play fast and loose.

Yes, I did realize later that this individual doesn't have a great track record (FYI he was the one who claimed that the FC-31 had a worse RCS than the J-10C). However, some of the points, including the fact that the 09IVA are merely retrofits and that the 09IIIA was displayed in the naval parade, are indeed from some very credible individuals (although not all are directly insiders).

Then provide a links to what these 'very credible individuals' said. Who are these 'very credible individuals'? What's their track record?

Then provide a link to what these 'very credible individuals' said.

Their comments are scattered across different forums & media platforms, so I'm not going to bother digging up each one and linking them. One of these individuals goes by the username "星海军事" and although he/she is not necessarily a "big shrimp", their observations have been accurate up to this point.
