I thought I would create a thread on the Type 072 LST class for the PLAN. The PLAN is still building and outfitting these actively so a thread about them is worth having.

The PLAN uses the Type 72 LST, in four varieties/flights/versions.

The latest that the PLAN is building is the Type 072A/B LST, 4,800 tons and 500 tons carry capacity. Sixteen have been commissioned since since 2003, with four of those commissioned recently. This makes sixteen of the Type 072A/B in all.

    Type 072A LST.jpg
911 (A) 天柱山 / Tianzhu Shan Dalian Shipyard North Sea Fleet Active
912 (A) 大青山 / Daqing Shan Dalian Shipyard North Sea Fleet Active
913 (A) 八仙山 / Baxian Shan Zhonghua Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
992 (A) 华顶山 / Huading Shan WuChong Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active
993 (A) 罗宵山 / Luoxiao Shan Zhonghua Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active
994 (A) 戴云山 / Daiyun Shan WuChong Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active
995 (A) 万羊山 / Wanyang Shan Zhonghua Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active
996 (A) 老铁山 / Laotie Shan Dalian Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active
997 (A) 绿华山 / Lühua Shan WuChong Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
981 (B) 大别山/ Dabie Shan WuChong Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
982 (B) 大韩珊/Taihan Shan WuChong Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
983 (B) WuChong Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
916 (B) 天目山/Tian Mushan Fuchang Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
914 (B) 武夷山/Wuyi Shan WuChong Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
915 (B) 徂徕山/Sanded WuChong Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
917 (B) 五台山/Mountain WuChong Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active

Before that, you had the Type 072 III, 7,000 tons and 500 tons carry capacity. Ten launched from 1992 to 2002 and all active:

    Type 072 III LST.jpg
991 峨眉山 / Emei Shan Zhonghua Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active
934 丹霞山 / Danxia Shan Zhonghua Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
935 雪峰山 / Xuefeng Shan Zhonghua Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
936 海洋山 / Haiyang Shan Zhonghua Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
937 青城山 / Qingcheng Shan Zhonghua Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
908 雁荡山 / Yandang Shan Zhonghua Shipyard North Sea Fleet Active
909 九华山 / Jiuhua Shan Zhonghua Shipyard North Sea Fleet Active
939 普陀山 / Putuo Shan Zhonghua Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active
910 黄岗山 / Huanggang Shan Zhonghua Shipyard North Sea Fleet Active
940 天台山 / Tiantai Shan Zhonghua Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active

Before that, you had the Type 072 II, 4,800 tons and 500 tons carry capacity. Four were built and commissioned by 1993

    Type 072 II LST.jpg
930 灵岩山 / Lingyan Shan Zhonghua Shipyard East Sea Fleet Active.
931 洞庭山 / Dongting Shan Zhonghua Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active
932 贺兰山 / Helan Shan Zhonghua Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active
933 六盘山 / Liupan Shan Zhonghua Shipyard South Sea Fleet Active

And before that, you had the Type 72, 4,100 tons and 500 tons carry capacity. Three built and commissioned between 1978 and 1982:

    Type 072 LST.jpg
927 云台山 / Yuntai Shan Zhonghua Shipyard, transferred to Coast Guard Active
928 五峰山 / Wufeng Shan Zhonghua Shipyard, transferred to Coast Guard Active
929 紫金山 / Zijin Shan Zhonghua Shipyard, transferred to Coast Guard Active

So that's a total of 33 of these good sized LSTs in service with the PRC.

I can see why the older variants came with the AA guns as they were no more obsolete than the rest of the PLAN at the time, but why do the new build 072A's bother with the obsolete guns?

My guess.....cheap, minimal change to design, and does not leave the ship completely defenseless.

This is not the 3rd, but the 2nd #982! So there is only two new ships that has been launched...so far.

Shouldn't China be focusing on building LPDs? If they are building more of the type 071 why are building more LSTs at the same time?

LSTs are still quite useful in amphibious operations in Taiwan contingencies or ECS and SCS.

It seems like blue water navies like the US Navy have replaced their amphibious fleet with LPDs, LHDs and such. If PLAN wants to become a blue water navy shouldn't it follow in the same direction?

How is that a question of becoming a blue water navy?

And LSTs are more effective in etablishing a steady stream of supplies and troops.
