Re: Type 071 LPD

there was something interesting mentionned on Chinese forum. They were saying how they got some World war 2 American landing ship and they are still in great condition after years of usage. But on some of the Chinese built landing ships, they put some tanks on them, and the ship is already having problems with quality. It's nice to see new and larger ships coming out with different types of missiles and radar, but the workmanship and engine reliability can't be underestimated.

The USN had trouble with the LPD-17 class all during the first ship's construction. All sorts of bugs. But they were worked out in short order. Perhaps in the case of the PLAN the problem is two fold. New ships always have "bugs". And China is building ships at a very fast rate there are bound to be quality control problems. If this is the case the Chinese shipbuilders need to step up the quality control in building warships.

Afterall what's the use of having all these nice new shiney ships if they don't work as advertised????

I remember that Thai navy experienced numerous problems whit Chinese built Naresuan class and Jianghu-class FFGs.

The quality of workmanship of the frigate was said to be inferior, and considerable rework was needed to bring the vessels up to acceptable standards. The ability of the ships to resist battle damage was extremely limited, and damage control facilities were virtually non-existent. Fire-suppression systems were rudimentary, and it appeared that were the hull breached rapid flooding would quickly lead to the loss of the ship.

I hope that new PLAN ships are built whit better quality control and that PLAN is facing problems only whit amphibious ships...

Re: Type 071 LPD

Well it can't have been as chronic as widely reported as the Thai's are still buying warships off China. The fire equipment relates to what the ships were fitted with as sold, not necessarily an indiation of PLAN fits although I doubt that the PLAn emphasises survivability as much as some Western navies. On the point of quality, there are some corvettes built in Britain for some gulf state (I forget which) where the customer is refusing to pay because of supposed quality problems.

Naresuan class and Jianghu-class FFGs?? Both ships were delievered almost 2 decades ago! PRC are progressing very fast. Quality control and standard are much higher nowadays. As what some mention, why Thai still buy PRC made corvette if quality is really that bad?

generally, I believe the quality of Chinese ships are very good, since they are doing very well in the commercial sector. They would not get as many orders if the ships are lacking in quality. However, LSD/LPD is a different matter. I think someone else can provide better commentary than me. Since they have to carry tanks and other heavy equipments, the requirements are probably higher.
