Why is that ramp so low? Purely for lcu operations?
Because you always need a low harbour or an entrance like this to enter the ship...
The dutch lpds got their ramps quite high to be able to load in harbour and unload.

You don't think the PLAN would send it over unescorted do you? And don't forget that before any kind of attempt at landing troops, the navy and PLAAF would have been already worked hard at softening up Taiwan's defenses.
In any case. Let's hope the situation never devolves to the need to use force.
This is simply a ridiculous statement.
The Type 071 is a LPD. it will operate as a part of a group of ships.
At this stage, it is highly unlikely that it would ever be needed for a cross strait invasion in any case as Taiwan and the PRC continue to move forward with less agitation and conflict of earlier years as their economies continue to merge.
But the Type 071 would be operating with air cover from either land bases or carriers, it will have its own set of DDG and FFG escorts, and will ultimately operate with other LPDs and LSTs...and eventually the PLAN equivalent of LHDs.
They would not attempt a close in advance on any land mass until relative air superiority and dominance were already achieved.
These ships are not made to make individual, single forays in any contested space...so lets leave off the statements that they are somehow a waste of money and basing such a statement on flawed logic.

But what are those things mounted in the middle of the first two? Some sort of radar, possibly for testing purposes? It's set in an awkward position, as it's recessed between the structures on each side...
