It's noteworthy 056 corvette is also equipped with rocket-assisted torpedo (Yu-11?), which was unveiled in last year's CCTV Military Report.
This type 56 is truly multipurpose ship exceeding the capability of her predecessor Hainan class by miles. A nifty little ship that pack a punch

IMO it wouldn't have been mission-creepy to have just included an organic hangar in the 056's design. It might have enlarged the vessel's displacement by a few hundred tons, increased the cost per ship by a few millions, and maybe decreased the overall inventory by a few ships, but if this ship is meant to be an ASW corvette, it really should have its own dedicated helo. And 8 slant launchers while they were at it, 4 for antiship missiles, and 4 for these ASW cruise missiles.

Having a helicopter is mission creep for the Type-56.

The key thing is that the Type-56 is designed to operate under friendly air cover from mainland China.

A Type-56 might only cost say $100M, but a Seahawk helicopter costs $42M. That is a large jump in cost.

And when comparing ASW helicopters versus ASW planes, we can see that the Poseidon P-8 costs $125M which is 3x the cost of a Seahawk. Yet an ASW plane can carry much more payload (sensors, sonobuoys, torpedoes, antiship missiles, etc), and has the endurance/speed to cover much more ocean than a helicopter.

That is the reason why the Type-56 has no helicopter, and would primarily rely on Y-9 MPAs.

---

And if China can get a a SQUID magnetometers working with a detection range of 6km, the advantage of fixed plane ASW becomes even more pronounced.

Come to think of it, if SQUID magnetometers or another ASW detection technology (like blue light LIDAR) comes to fruition, then ASW aircraft will have to fly a low altitudes in order to be effective.

So the Y-9 ASW turboprop (suited to low altitudes) potentially has a huge advantage over the P-8 Poseidon, which is designed around wings and turbojets for high altitude B-737s.

How convenient of you to compare Chinese corvette price to a Western helo price. The Z-9 only costs ~$16 million; this is actually the helicopter we see most often on the deck of the 056. How large is that jump now?

Also, being designed to operate under friendly air cover has zero relevance to whether the 056 should or should not have a hangar and on-board ASW helos.

I'm not sure what made you think the PLAN can't use both fixed-wing and rotary-wing ASW aircraft. In fact the PLAN is using both. The only difference is that currently the rotary-wing ASW aircraft are based on land whereas they would be much more effective if based on a naval platform in terms of both range and reaction time. Having hangars would enable 056As to hunt in wolfpacks of 3-4 allowing them to collectively deploy a helo in the air on station 24/7. Without a hangar there is no maintenance facility and no ability to sustain high tempo helo ops. They would have to fly back to their land-based hangars possibly hundreds of km away from their current position.

Z9 is no where near $16 million

PN has 6 and I can tell you they are NOT $16 million a piece

Biggest threat to a submarine short of a hunter killer is a ASW chopper

Any submarine captain worst nightmare especially in littoral waters

Which if true would be even more support for my case for a dedicated hangar for the 056.
