The 32nd 056 already? If I remember correctly the last time there was a count it was in the mid-20's no?

Nope, that's about right it seems.

The Chinese language wikipedia page has a good rundown of all the 056s which have been launched thus far, as well as their variant (scroll to the bottom half of the page for the large table)

Are you sure that's what they named this Type 056? Suzhou is a pretty big city, second largest in its province. I think a Type 056 is too small to be named after such a large and prosperous city, Suzhou should be the namesake of at least a Type 054A.

This 503 is named after Suzhou (宿州), a medium sized city (in Chinese terms, around 6 million population is medium...) situated in the northern part of Anhui province; historically its location was quite strategic.

And it is not the famous and ancient city of Suzhou (苏州), a city with 10.6 million population that sits next to Shanghai, which I think you are talking about.

However their names written in Roman alphabetic representations are the same if tones are omitted, which can lead to confusion sometimes.

...and here's the jpg:

They have launched 32 in four years...eight per year. Now have ten of the ASW Variant.

I wonder how many they will actually build.

Who woulnd?
They seem to be good ships in price/punch rate.
I prefer these as my own nations Holland class OPVs wich are bigger slower and actually no armament except a 76mm and 30mm...

They are also good looking and they can poop them out in a few moments.
I hope they even build more. Would be nice to see packs of 3 sailing about for coastal defence.
Maybe some larger aaw missiles in a medium range vls pack.

I believe they may build over 64 of these.

They are definitely replacing the old Type 037 corvettes and even the older Type 062I Haizhui-class sub chasers. Altogether, the Chinese had something like 150 of these two types built.

Now, the Type 056 is much more capable so I would not expect a one for one replacement...but I can still see 80 of these vessels being built.

We shall see.

China has a long coastline and a lot of area in the SCS that these vessels can help patrol and cover.
