Pretty sure Brazil is more developed than India.

i don't know and i haven't been there but both countries have done a remarkable job at improving their global standing. But i would honestly lean more towards India just due to the fact they have a lot more indigenous development going on in every industrial field.

No need to visit. Just look at their ranking on human development index, which takes into account infrastructure and development. Brazil is ranked as High at #75 while India is a developing country at #134. Also average Brazil income is $10,400 while India is $2,900. In no way is India more developed, in fact Brazil is much more developed than India.

Sorry for this single somewhat off-topic post. However, I cannot allow the statements in Londo's two posts (see #624 and #626) of Brazil being clearly "more developed than India" pass by without challenge.

In my view, I believe India is a more innovative country with either a stronger current technological base than Brazil or it will be in the near future. Last year, India received 720 patents from the U.S. patent office. That was almost five times the 148 patents that Brazil received.

Based on the number of U.S. patents received, it is difficult to swallow the proposition that "Brazil is much more developed than India." Brazil may have a higher standard of living, but India is developing home-grown innovative technology five times faster than Brazil.

"China Claims #9 Rank In United States Patents!

For 2009, China passed Italy to claim the ninth-highest rank for countries that receive the most patents in the United States.

Patents granted by the United States for the year 2009.

1. U.S. 95,037 patents
2. Japan 38,066
(Greater China 10,638)
3. Germany 10,353
4. South Korea 9,566
5. Taiwan 7,781
6. Canada 4,393
7. U.K. 4,011
8. France 3,805
9. China 2,270
10. Italy 1,837
...
India 720
Hong Kong 587 (Patent office counts Hong Kong as a separate entity)
Singapore 493
Russian Federation 204
Brazil 148

For 2009, Greater China's 10,638 combined total patents (i.e. China's 2,270 + Taiwan's 7,781 + Hong Kong's 587) are greater than Germany's 10,353 patents. Greater China would rank third on the U.S. patent list. The patent ranks are important because they help to explain why China is the world's largest exporter and Germany is the world's second-largest exporter. Patents play an important role.

[Note: These are my comments from last year on "Greater China outnumbers German patents."

There are 70,000 Taiwanese companies on the Chinese Mainland. It is my guess that many Chinese exports incorporate not only Chinese patents, but also Taiwanese patents. The Taiwanese were a perennial #4 in U.S. patents received until they were passed by South Korea in 2008.

While the current number of Chinese patents appears to be insufficient to support a large high-tech export base, the combination of Greater China (i.e. Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong) patents should suffice.

Greater China's 10,370 patents (i.e. China's 1,874 + Taiwan's 7,779 + Hong Kong's 717) are greater than the number of German patents at 10,086.

I believe what you are arguing is the PACE of development, not the absolute level of development. Brazil may not be developing as fast as India, but it's initial stage of developed-ness is higher than India. India may catch up in the future, but Brazil has the ewdge now. As you mentioed, Brazil has a higher standard of living, which is a good indicator of the developed-ness of the nation.

what you argue is equivalent of saying China is more developed than Japan and the US because its GDP is increasing in double digit for over decades while Japan and the US are at a standstill. We know we cannot say that. So similarly, you cannot say India is more developed than Brazil simply because India files more patents. It is a matter of pace vs. absolute level.

There is serious problem built in right in the post... if patented granted is only measure of strong technological base, then South Kora would be roughly 20 times stronger than Russia, and Taiwan almost double France.

That is simply not even close to reality.

This is however off-topic and I will now stop.

Patents posted in the United States.
Taiwan comes high up because the only major country that still maintains good relations with Taiwan remains the US. You only patent in the US if you want to move into the American market. China, India and Brazil have all huge domestic markets (not mentioning the rest of the world). Thus, if you focus on the 6 billion humans not living in the US, you will not come high up on this list. That doesn't mean you're not a technological and industrial powerhouse. Last time I read, India was falling behind, while China and Brazil were wizzing up the list of patents.

Main point: Methodologically flawed data. End of discussion.

Now onto the 054s. Ah, another one under construction. I feel there's been a general lack of new information on construction of more 054s. Are they pausing construction because of the expo or because they are developing a new variant? Or have we simply not discovered more construction? Last year we had two or three being constructed at the same time. Now we get an update on one for the first time for several months.

With the 053H fleet becoming ever less capable carrying out their missions,
PLAN will keep on building 054A for sure. The only problem is 054A is far bigger & no doubt more expensive to build. Ideally another corvett-like class of vessel should replace the bulk of 053H fleet, doing offshore patrol, mine hunting or ASW etc. while 054A & her successors dedicate themselves to PLAN's "blue water" dream.

Now that neither the corvett nor the large gas-turbine-driven-double-helo-hangar frigate is available, PLAN may build 054A just for urgent replacements of 053H as well as training the crew to handle modern equipments. This is also why I'm reluctant to associate the 054A project with PLAN expansion, since it is not increasing the size of the fleet but retaining the current size. Again I deem 054A a transitional class of vessel, the total number of which not sufficiently indicative of PLAN's ambition. I reckon another 4-6 will be built and shared by NSF & ESF (depends on the progress of an cheaper alternative), not really that enthusiastic about the total number honestly

Because the best is yet to come. ;)
