Interesting overhead view of the RHIB launching system on FFG-576 Daqing. I count nine seats on the RHIB. The operator's seat has what appears to be a footrest.

Generally these RHIBs do not have a fixed gun.

But they probably do have mount that a small MG could be attached to if needed...and at the very least, they have provisions for the personnel to carry their own rifles.

But like I say, I would expect a mount along the side, or a provision to mount something like that at any number of places along the side.

If this is true, as you don't usually sell your top guns to others unless you have something better, would this imply that the PLAN is going ahead with developing Type 054B?

We've known that to be almost certainly the case for a couple years now, with some fairly significant big shrimp chatter in the last year in particular.

So yes, 054B is on the cards in the near future

I cannot tell from this article which frigate the Pakistanis are syaing they will acquire.

I would be surprised it the Chinese were about to turn over a Type 54A to Pakistan though.

That's the thing - it's been rumoured for many years now, so how do we know this time it's real?

That's what I thought too... I won't be so surprised to hear this if we're already seeing a bunch of Type 054Bs around being commissioned, but at this moment something's telling me this isn't quite right...

We have been hearing about 054B for a long time because it has been in the pipeline for a long time. There is nothing mysterious about that. It's older than 052D, 055, and 056.

I doubt there is any major obstacle on China's side to Pakistan (or anyone else for that matter) acquiring 054 series ships, I suspect it is simply a matter of funding and production arrangements. Perhaps a future Pakistani 054 will omit certain systems found on PLAN vessels or be some kind of hybrid between 054A/B configurations, but I expect the customisations will be relatively minor compared to the evolution from 053H3 to F22P.
