054/A FFG Thread II

Sorry dude, but you must be misinterpreting your photo.

The Daring's VLS protrudes quite a bit.
tbh I've never thought about this much, but this discussion made me do some searching of my own I think the Type 45's VLS does protrude from the bow deck level quite a bit.

The photo you posted is a little misleading because it doesn't show the height of the rest of the bow deck relative to the "VLS deck" height, which is best shown at a slight angle, with a photo like this (below), where we can see that the entire Type 45 VLS complex is sort of an elevated "block" or rectangular prism that is elevated above the rest of the bow's deck level.

@Iron Man said "The Type 45 does not have its Sylver launchers any higher than VLS launchers are usually, i.e. a few inches to a foot or less." Emphasis mine.

He's not wrong; 054As, Akizukis, etc, protrude about "a few inches to a foot or less".

However I think based on these photos the Sylver launchers are at least 1 meter higher than the rest of the deck. The railing are typically between 1-1.2 meters tall and the VLS box is much higher than that. If you pay attention to the photo you'll see that it even requires a set of stairs to reach the top.

Yes, 054As and Akizukis, and most other VLS etc protrude only a few inches to a foot or less. That's not a matter of dispute.

But I think everyone was talking about how high the Type 45's SYLVER launchers protrude from the bow deck relative to the VLS aboard those other ships -- I think the photos that have been posted clearly show they (i.e.: the VLS of Type 45) protrudes far more than "a few inches to a foot or less".

So going back to his statement, the Type 45 does have its SYLVER launches protrude higher than what other VLS launchers are usually (a few inches to a foot or less).

Actually, looking closely at the 45s and Akizukis, I think both their VLS modules are ~1.8m above the deck. Both of them are a little taller than a sailor's height.

Whereas a 054A's VLS only protrudes around 80cm.

Iron Man probably should've said "within a metre or two" as opposed to "a few inches to a foot".

Hmm but if he said "within a meter or two" that changes the meaning of his statement. And "within a meter or two" is a massive height range as well.

Also, now that I look at it, Akizuki's VLS protrusion is fairly different to Iron Man's original statement as well and is more similar to Type 45, and quite different to 054A.

In fact, the Akizuki class and its preceding Takanami class, Type 45, as well as the Mk-41 VLS on the RAN's refitted OHP class frigates, all protrude more than "a few inches to a foot" from the bow deck level.

If one wants, one can even include the German Sachsen class FFG in that category, although I think its elevated VLS platform is much more of an integrated topside structure (though I don't mind if it's included with the latter group or not).

Frankly, reading Iron Man's statement I have a feeling he meant "a few inches to a foot," and was probably thinking about the height of the 054A's VLS protrusion from the bow deck as well as that of a Burke+derivatives, Tico, 052C/D, and maybe the Horizon class, rather than Type 45+Akizuki/Takanami+RAN's upgraded OHPs+/-Sachsen class.

Putting it another way, I think the question we're asking is in two parts:
1: whether the Type 45's VLS protrudes "a few inches to a foot" above its bow deck
2: whether the majority of surface warships have their VLS protrude only "a few inches to a foot" above their bow deck

Regarding 1, I think the Type 45's VLS deinitely proturdes more than a few inches to a foot above its bow deck
Regarding 2, I think there is a sensible statement to say that the majority of the world's warships with VLS on their bow decks, have their VLS protrude only "a few inches to a foot" above the bow deck (considering how many Burke deriatives there are + Ticos + 054As + 052C/Ds etc). However I'm not sure whether the majority of the world's warship classes with VLS on their bow decks have their VLS proturde only "a few inches to a foot" above the bow deck.

I guess my point is proven then. If PLAN wants 9m VLS cells they can simply make them so that the protrude from the deck. In fact they could even retrofit them as demonstrated by the OHP frigates. Btw can anyone explain why PLAN's striek capable VLS needs to be 9m long when the strike variant of Slyver is only 7m?

Yes Daring Class only combattants with a VLS as elevated not nice in relation with hull and while Sylver A-50 do 5 m curious.

Ha! I should have said "a meter or so" to be more accurate in general.

I clearly didn't look closely enough at the Sylver launcher height from multiple angles. You guys are right, the Type 45's Sylver looks like they protrude at least a meter above the rest of the foredeck.
