054/A FFG Thread II

In escorting aircraft carriers, it is critical.

Carriers look to actual speed to generate optimum air flow over the deck in air operations, and for mobility and safety. An FFG will need to be able to keep up, and that may require extended periods at or over 30 knots for certain carriers.

I think that is the issue some are raising.

Now, if the Liaoning and other future Chinese carriers cruise for air ops and for mobility happily at 28 knots, then the Type 054A will work fine.

Thanks for clearing that up. That's also probably why a Chinese carrier won't ever be escorted by a SSK for long-legged missions.

I'd imagine such a requirement wouldn't be much of an issue for US CBGs since their carriers use steam catapults (and thus wouldn't require much of a headwind).

Another rare photo of 054A's VLS launch:

It is most definitely an issue/requirement with the US Navy and its carrier groups, despite the Steam and now EMAL catapults.

You will see US FFGs and DDGs all being capable of 30+ knots.

The carriers are nuclear powered and capable of up to 35 knots. The escorts and subs need to hang with them if they have to really scoot for whatever reasons.

So the Burkes (30+ knots), the Ticos (32+ knots), the old Perry class (30+ knots), the new LCS (35-40 knots), the LA Class SSNs (32-33 knots), the Sea Wolf Class SSNs (30-35 knots), and the Virginia class SSNs (32+ knots) all have that higher speed capability.

It's more expensive...but the US Navy views it as worth it.

I don't see Chinese Navy (CN) would be as capable as the USN, definitely not before 2050. And I don't think CN has the same goals/objectives as USN (global power). So the requirement for CN carriers may not be as high as the carriers in USN.
So less powerful, less capable, less speed and less numbers of carriers than the USN may be more than enough for CN at least until 2050

And I don't believe a single carrier (or even 2) would be effective against a major power countries (top 10) in 2025-2030, definitely not CN carrier

sorry if its a bit off topic

It is my understanding that the Nimitz class ships have never exceeded 31.5 knots

Enterprise 33.6 knots after last refit
Nimitz 31.5 knots
Theodore Roosevelt 31.3 knots
Harry S Truman 30.9 knots

Per the article cited, the data was released to the public in 1999 by USN. The real top speed (as tested during trial runs) is likely classified.

I have friends and relatives who have been on the carriers. I promise you, they can do far better than 31.5 knots.

But it is not published and the actual figures are classified.

Popeye (I am sure) will tell us the same if he sees this...and he spent over 20 years on them.

But this is getting far off topic now. If you want to discuss this specifically, take it to the Aircraft Carrier Thread.

Okay. it's time to have a correct listing of theType 054A vessels, and then keep it uup tp date. What's happening at Wiki is a shame...but actually, to be expected.

We can do better here on SD.

So, I have two files I will maintain on my server and post here on SD looking for our community's input.

One is an excel spread sheet, the other is a jpg image of that spreadsheet.
I need more info on 576, need more info on units 21 and 22, and need folks here to review and ensure that everything is right for the others.

We can get input on this thread, and then when folks here are satisfied and we have a large consensus, we will then keep it up to date.

Here's the image:

Here's the excel file the image is based on:

My copy will be the official copy, but will be posted here on SD for the world to see...and use hopefully as a more reliable source. This post is the first such post...but we will wait for imput and review here before we finalize and say it is up to date.

Forbin? Tphuang? A.Mnn? SinoSoldier? NavyRco? Asif? everyone?

Good list Jeff

Type 054A production does not seem to have stopped and seems like it could continue

This has proved to be most exciting just when we think it might close it just keeps going

A fine FFG
