Launched already? As if they're trying very hard to meet a deadline, launching the ship even though some equipment is not complete. The Huangpu ship was launched complete.

kind of like the other ones that got launched before, they weren't completed either.

I have said it once...and I'll say it again. The Type 054A FFG is a very nice and capable frigate design. Great lines and great set of capabilities.

I can see numerous batches of these being built.

Yes, but 054A is only Frigate .... and for some european countries would be considered as "only" Corvette

btw is 054A really better than La Fayetted or Formidable ??? I think the best Frigate is Spanish Bazan-class frigates

The Horizon class are considered "frigates" too.

The distinction between FFGs and DDGs is becoming more and more blurred...and political in nature.

For me, for dedicated surface combatants whose purpose is either multi-function combat or specialized combat (combat being the primary word here) I believe displacement is generally a better guage.

Below 2500 tons - Corvette
2500-5000 tons - Frigate
5000-9000 tons - Destroyer
Over 9000 tons - Cruiser

Doesn't always work, but for me it works for the vast majority of cases. But that's just me and surely not the way they are classified today by most navies.

Anyhow, based on its displacement, when compared to other equal displacement vessels, the 054A is a good vessel IMHO.

Note...I did not say it was the best, or better than others like the Formidable or La Fayette. Just that it is a good FFG...which it is.

Why don't you find out more about them and judge for yourself? Here's a good website if you want to know more about the Formidable. It's the most comprehensive article I know focusing on the frigate.

wondering it is the large European frigates has to do with naming conversions. Did in the 50's and 60's, USN "frigates" are actually light cruisers and "Destroyer Escorts" are actually frigates of its day.

European convention is based from the days of the sailing ships, where frigates are of the same size as the capital ships and were nearly as capable. In the 19th century, frigates in Europe were the ships of the line, until the designation 'frigate' fell out of use in favour of designations such as armoured cruisers and battleships.

HP shipyard just keeps going at it, this looks to be the 4th 054A under construction there.
