This is the first photo I have seen that shows a missile launch from the bridge of a 054A:

Another door also opened. Maybe two missiles were launched in one salvo.

I created a gif of an 054A's HHQ-16 intercepting what seems to be a sea skimmer (target drone?) from the news clip of the recent SCS exercise.

Can't see exactly what it hit, but it does looks like the missile intercepting something near the sea level. If that target drone was homing in the 054A and the HHQ-16 failed to intercept it's traget, wouldn't it be dangerous for the 054A crew even if the drone was without a warhead? Or they can have the drone self destruct when it's too close to the ship like other missiles or they can actually control the flight path of the drone all the way remotly?

I think target drones typically are programmed to fly on pre arranged paths such that they will not actually be in danger of crossing paths with the ships themselves.
Drones are not typically equipped with seekers to my knowledge, that is to say, they don't actively home in on a ship.
Some target drones are equipped with self destruct.

Either way, there are many ways in which they can simulate a realistic target without actually having the target present a threat to the individuals in the exercise.

The Standard 2-6 systems (except Standard 3) all have the capabilities to target both enemy planes and enemy ships. Just wondering if the HHQ-9 and HHG-16 have similar anti-ship capabilities.

The Type 054A series really pack a punch and are a great multi role FFG

A powerful warship and I can see why PLAN is getting so many of them
We saw, in the late 1990s through 2007 or so, relatively small numbers of newer PLAN combatants being inducted.

2 x Sovs
2 x Improved Sovs
2 x Type 052 DDG
2 x Type 052B
2 x Type 052C
1 x Type 051B DDG
2 x Type 051C FFG
2 x Type 054 FFG

That's 17 vessels. And all of them in that time period were two-off vessel builds (except the single Type 051B).

Since that time, in the last eight years, we have seen the PLAN adopt strong modern designs and begin building a lot of them.

06 x Type 052D DDGs launched
04 x Type 052C DDGs launched and commissioned.
20 x Type 054A guided missile frigates commissioned
22 x Type 056 Light frigates/Corvettes commissioned.

That's 52 new, modern major surface combatants in eight years Basically, the PLAN has been producing six and a half major surface combatants per year. And more Type 052Ds, Type 054As, and Type 056s are being built.

This of course does not include the subs, amphibious ships, AOR vessels, etc.
