Pretty sure that is a destroyer hull without the superstructure and topside modules installed.

What appears to be a ski jump is just the curve of the deck. And note how the bow is sharp. A ski jump would be wide at the bow, rather than narrowing to a sharp point.
Compare side on pictures of 052D with this picture and I think we will find the hull shapes are identical

Yes just had a second look now on my ipad and it's a DDG

It's in the right place and also blue tents are too and so is the red crane

Oh well excitement lasted like 2 seconds

Similarly, if the PLAN produces 055 and it is 13,000 tons, with 128 VLS, 3 sets of phased array radars, etc etc, will it be fair to compare it with a 9000 ton 96 VLS Burke on a one to one basis? Of course not, because the USN will have much more Burkes than the PLAN will likely produce 055.

Question - how does the 055 compare to the

They are both very similar in tonnage, both have 128 VLS, similar sets of weapons etc.

actually, we don't know what 055 looks like, so that would be hard to say. And even 054A, only very recently did we find out information about some of its ASW suite, so this is way too early to say.

Like tphuang said, we can't really say in confidence given we haven't seen the ship's modules yet.

But if we take the most highly circulated rumours in confidence 055 will likely displace 2000+ tons more and feature more sets of phased array MFRs.

Armament is only part of the equation in comparing ships. For instance, Akizuki class only has 32 VLS the same number as 054A or Formidable class, but carries a more capable radar on a larger hull which brings many advantages not only in terms of range and endurance but more importantly in terms of sensors, processing, battle management, countermeasures.

That is why comparing 055 (based on preliminary speculation specs) with ships like Sejongs and ticos only on the basis of similar VLS count is flawed

At the very best, it is premature.

It would be trying to compare speculation and what might be to what actually is. That's never a very good mix.

I'm really confused here. That looks more like a ski-jump carrier deck (like Liaoning) than a type 052D. Somebody help me please!

Not to me at all.

It looks like a DDG hull with nothing built/installed top side yet.

Far too small to be a carrier, and the hull form is all wrong.

If it is a DDG, perhaps it is indeed perhaps Dalian's first Type 052D.

Actually I disagree somewhat; while we do not have physically confirmed specs of what 055 will be, we do have enough speculation to surmise and draw up a projection. Keeping in mind that our information on even the PLANs already built ships is limited to general dimensions, crewing, and generalised/non specific armament and sensor count to begin with, I think there is room for broad stroke comparisons of a ship that has yet to be built versus existing ships.
It is not dissimilar to the guys over at ship bucket forums speculating how future or never built ship designs may compare with real life counterparts, the only difference being we know 055 is definitely going to be built and we have some firm but broad parameters to speculate around.

The point i was more trying to make (poor phrasing on my part) is that the projected specs of 055 and Sejong are quite different which is why Ultra's calling them similar only on the basis of VLS count is flawed, and why I brought in the akizuki vs 054A and Formidable example.

It's my fault guys I was on my phone at work and I thought the DDG at DL looked like a carrier! Once I seen a clearer shot I realised it was not a carrier! My bad o_O:cool:
