Maybe it turns out to be a ‘larger 517B’...

Kind of disappointing they would bother to pixelate that part of the picture when there is nothing to be expected that is bleeding edge about the radar.

If true, they're trading very low frequency advantage for a more modern setup capable of much greater resolution and providing altitude data as well.

It remains to be seen if the radar in question is indeed going to be an L band one. I for one wouldn't be surprised if it's actually UHF. Seems like a better complementary to main S band arrays.

I didn't realize a 052D could launch missiles so rapidly. Supposedly some variant of the HQ-9.

It appears to be a larger Yagi array, with like before, 2 x 8 elements. The antenna design of each Yagi element has changed. Higgle's post on the HQ-9 launching also provides a convenient picture of the current Yagi array for comparison. Far from a SMART-L and working on the L-band, this means the radar still works on the metric range.

A very clear and detailed photo... Click here for the full-resolution (2571 x 3860) version.
