Besides, there is nothing wrong with using the 76mm gun for the 056/A and the 054A/B (and the 071), and using the 130mm gun for the 052C/D/E and the 055.

I think the 052C isn't using the new 130mm but a 100mm gun (based on the french 100mm) that is also used by the 2 054 frigates and the 051B and 051C destroyers (there might be some different models of this gun).

Yes, you're right. Though I think by the next 15-20 years all PLAN surface combatants will have consolidated into the 76mm and 130mm guns once all the older ships are retired and the 052Cs are refitted.

True for the first 2 052C (2005). But the other newer 4 (2013-2015), I am pretty sure use 130mm gun

I agree that seems likely, but I'm not sure if the choice of the 76mm for the 054A was based on the advantages the 76mm has over the 100mm.
If the 76mm was choosen only because the 100mm didn't fit the space available, then I could imagine that the next frigate might use a 100mm again if the space can be found.

I don't think the PLAN would consider 3 different shell calibers a big logistics problem. If I'm not mistaken they currently need different ammunition for the "old chinese 100mm" guns (053 variants, some of the 051s), the "old chinese 130mm" (the other 051s), the "new 'french' 100mm", the "76mm", the "new chinese 130mm" and perhaps also for the "russian 130mm" (does anyone know if the AK-130 can use the same ammunition as the HP/J-38 ?).

My understanding is that the PLAN was unsatisfied with the 100mm gun for performance reasons and opted to go with the 130mm gun for their 052Ds and the 76mm gun for the 054As.

I thought it is either the 130mm (for larger boats like type 055) or 76mm. H/PJ26 is universally loved for the fire rate and maturity of the control software, here is an old video people often refer to:

Wow impressive rate of fire! I believe you are correct they choose 76mm gun due to its rapid fire to protect the ships against missile
