And now Russia looks even weaker by removing the Shtorm and Lidar from the official budget plans...

LOL that is correct, Russia have 5 years plan just like China, they didn't put any of those ships on budget plan from now to 2025.

Its not that Russia is weak, its just that they are a lot weaker come to the Soviet days, and now their foreign policy priority is very much focused on their European sectors. Nuclear cruisers and carrier is a waste of resource for what they need to do.

btw can we move this whole discussion to Russian military trend?

I wonder if there is a land attack version of the YJ-18, as its Russian counterpart does. Also, when the U.S. DoD said that the YJ-18 has a range of more than 500km, could that mean while the land attack variant has such long range (or more), the anti-ship variant only has 220-300km?

Damn, i wanted to say exactly that. First that it seems to be very similar if not almost identical to Klub, and secondly - if it is so similar - what chances are there that a land attack variant (a la Kalibr) is also in service already?

On the other hand - hey, it's a missile with both long range and terminal supersonic approach. Seeker might be different than what Klub has, perhaps more modern, considering when Klub/Kalibr entered service.

One thing that Klub lacks is a bit longer ranged terminal stage. If i am not mistaken, Klub was promoted with terminal attack rocket being ignited 20 km away from target. That's not really enough today, Hopefully a different design was used, getting that to at least 25 km.

Klub is a 8.9 m long missile with booster, so that'd definitely take up whole of VLS cell. And with the Russian variant realized with 1980s technology, it seems plausible there could be some improvements when it comes to range. (primarely due to miniaturization of various subsystems, allowing more room for fuel)

The Klub is a very long missile, but a relatively thin one (533mm) as it needs to be compatible with torpedo tubes.

A Chinese ship-only successor missile would raise the diameter, utilizing cold launch, and have even more range than the Russian domestic version.

But I personally hope for a Chinese LRASM of some sort, that still retains the supersonic terminal stage.
