052C/052D Class Destroyers

Also important will be the production and commissioning of 054As and a successor frigate class... As well as the first few 055s. It will be very interesting to see how navies in the region adapt to the chinese navy as it grows.

I would say Japan CAN and most likely WILL
India CAN'T but desperately WANTS to.
I don't see Japan being left behind in anything China does. If China has a naval buildup then Japan has to keep up also, it's for their own credibility and place in Asia. India is obsessed with any or everything China does but unlike Japan, they don't have a world class shipbuilding industry. India will be frustrated watching China's navy grow. The other countries in Asia, they are not in the same league.

The separation between between China and Japan will be evident when China deploying 3 to 4 carrier groups with mix of j15 and j31. Japan can build destroyers and SSK but that's about it.

Don't forget the South Koreans. I expect them to probably up their orders as well if both China and Japan start a mini naval arms race.

Agree on India desperately wanting to get in on that game, but lacking the means to do so technically. They cannot apply their normal go-to solution of turning to Russia for weapons to hope to compete with China, but that does not mean they are out of contention altogether.

India has been getting very chummy with Japan lately, and with the changes to Japanese defence laws, there is an outside possibility that the Indians may turn to Japan or South Korea to help them fulfil their obsession with "matching" China at every turn.

Although such a deal would need American support and approval, since both the South Korean and Japanese ships rely on imported or licensed American components for their core radars, VLS and missile systems.

India and America have been getting very chummy as well, so I can certainly see Washington being receptive to such a deal. The only reason I can see America banning such a deal is if America wants to sell India warships directly.

So don't count India out just yet. It will cost them big time to do it, but they do have options if they are willing to pay through the nose to feel like they are in the same league as China.

When China deploys 3 or 4 carrier groups as you say, then Japan will build their own carriers too. They can't be left too far behind. Like I said their place in Asia is at stake here. Japan building full fledged carriers is way easier than China because they will have US support (EMALS, nuclear propulsion, E2C's, other critical subsystems). It will be in American interests to keep Japan sufficiently armed against a rising China. At the moment it seems implausible because we are not there yet, but when China does deploy 4 carrier groups, then the stakes are raised, and Japan will follow.

Does Japan even need carriers ? They only care about their littorals even more so than China. LHDs for ASW sure. But full catobar/emals carriers seem unnecessary if you can reach everything with your land based aircraft.

They need AC if they have ambitions in SCS or even Indian Ocean. Japan's F35 does not have the range to reach China main land either. If Japan still sees herself as a regional power, I assume a plan involving AC should be designed and evaluated, whether they carry it out or not is another issue.

Senkaku Islands and Taiwan are the furthest away I see Japan being engaged in a confllict.

There have been some signs. Japan's excuses were "trade routes".

The current Japanese government is the most pro-India in history. The navy does exercises on Indian Ocean quite often.
