Crobato, in your opinion, does 051C have the capacity to hold 144 9M96E missiles? If it does, that is huge.

Technically it could. In practice, the 051C if upgraded to using the 9M96, can have half the cells with the larger 48N6E2 for bigger targets and the 9M96E for anti missile work.

If upgraded, it looks like the 051C can be a very formidable ship. Still, the array is incapable of observing all 360 degrees simultaneously like the 052C can, so you still have a problem with multi axis attack.

While this image is intriguing, but it just looks just "too" pretty and painted up for me.

The two hatches that are open are the most revealing. I am not sure that the other smaller circles even represent openable hatches.

Perhaps they are, but I would have to see a lot more firm evidence first.

Guess we can add 9M96E to the wish list of imports from Russia.

If there is some kind of provisions for this missile before it was operational, it must mean the Chinese think highly of it. Could this be an indication of Chinese interest in the S400 system?

What's the device in the middle actually for? And what's with the octagonal thing being held up? And the "open" hatch actually has some sort of sleeve protruding out of it so that it's higher than the other cells.

Very odd. Is there a mechanical description of the mechanism somewhere? (Or a description of another VLS that's similar?)

Perhaps it is a revolving VLS and the hatch is the one the missiles are launched from.

Yes, they were. I'm not sure if, provided this is a revolving-type VLS, that they are the same system. They don't look the same to me. The Russian one had the appearance of widely dispersed hatches, each hatch representing one system, while this involve a circle with the hatch on one part of it. It could be the same or baded on it, but I'm honestly not sure.

Hmm. So the round covers with three smaller circles inscribed aren't really the hatches. Maybe they're used for loading the missiles.

The mechanism underneath (the "revolver") rotates and places the "live" missile under the big octagonal hatch (the "barrel"), which is then raised in order to fire the missile.

I suppose there's probably some sort of launching mechanism under the "barrel", so it makes sense not to have to duplicate that eight times.

Does that sound correct?

No. There are some serious issues here. First of all, tombstone can only direct 12 missiles against 6 targets in one direction. Now, 9M96E is actively guided, but it will still need data uplink until it can acquire the target. So, basically the tombstone will have to be tracking that target until 9M96E can acquire the target. This eliminates the advantage of being actively guided. So, the only radar I can think of on 051C that have the refresh rate and resolution required to do data uplink for 9M96E is SR-64, but that would involve them to do integration work with the Russians. And knowing the Russians, that will be another signficant pay hike. Not sure if it's worth it for this.
