The PLAN didn't receive its new generation of modernized ships until 1990s (with many imported French systems). It's prolly unrealistic to assume they'd match up to the latest Western designs (i.e. F124 Frigates) within such a short time.

sorry, I don't agree
I think there are two kinds of maritime philosphy

the on hand is for allrounder (multirole) destroyers and frigates, they can do everything but nothing perfect - thats ideal for small navys .....
the other hand is for specialised ships, which operate in battle groups. The combination of specialised ships will give a strong firepower at all kinds of threat;
051 C's ar specialised air defence guided missile destroyers. They have more as enough power in this kind of war, and they don't need ASW-helos (for example), because this job will be done by specialised ASW-combatants - and surface attack & defence could be done by 956em sovs (for example).

The hull of 051 C looks very similiar to Type 051B (NATO codename: Luhai class) multirole missile destroyer 167 Shenzhen, which visited europe in the past. So the 051 C could also operate long way from home by using the same propulsion (two indigenous steam turbine engines, which gives a top speed of 31k by 051 B, also two indigenous steam turbine engines is rumored to be in 051 C).

My five cents: the 051 C ar escort carriers in future CBGs - thats why they dont need Hangar-space, which is more as enough in the carrier.

I doubt 051c is not for CBGs.
the hull of 051c looks very similiar to type 051b(167 )they still use the old style hull,and 051c is larger then 051b (051b displacement is 600t full load,051c is 700t full load ),because they need larger ship to install S300 system,lots of missiles have to put in the ship.
051c will service in North Sea fleet,seems they will be used for chinese NMD,to protect the region of Beijing where close to Japan,so many US base around there.
the future carrier should service in South Sea fleet,052c will be the escort.
052c more like US style, fits the CGBs.
051b(167) is the first ship on sea trial,the after shiphulls are basis of 051b and some of 052a (LuHu).
that is why they don't progress the hull of 051c.
052c get more progress,installed JY-62,should be more mission then 051c.
the escort will be 052c and it's after type ship.

I figure they took an existing 115 picture and put a new background on it. Looks like an official photoshop.
