PLAN Type 051B/C Class Destroyers

If they going to install anything other than the old HQ7 system, the new SAM would most likely be the HQ-16 either in the same VLS modules as in the 054A FFG, or the CCL system installed on 052D DDG - that's because the superstructure has not much room to pack in those phased array radar panels, not without a total rebuild of the entire superstructure that is.

Saw this in the Ask Anything thread. Wouldn't the suggested lantern style superstructure provide an alternate means of mounting needed panels?

I really like the artist rendition of that 'improved' 051B.. If they can make it look nice, clean and reasonably price like, IMHO it would be very a serious contender for the export market. I can see a few navies in Asia maybe SA wanting to buy a destroyer such as this.

I'm glad to see the improvements but I kinda miss those 4 dual-37mm

turrets.:p I'm sure the sailors that did the firing drills on them had a lot of fun.

I've wondered how effective these dual 37mm anti-aircraft guns really were.
Did they have a good performance record?............i've always assumed that they would be quite poor in comparison to a modern CIWS system!

Probably those dual 37mm AA guns are for use against low flying aircraft and such, but not as effective as modern CIWS against cruise missiles and fast moving jets.

When I was drawing warships on paper as a kid, I always put as many as possible of these anti-aircraft gun on the ship. It just look cooler and more intimidating with many guns on the ship. At the time I thought the more guns my ship have the more powerful it will be.:D
