According to some sources, the Chinese have deployed "stealth cruise missiles" aboard their submarines, the performance of which is claimed to surpass that of what is believed to be the UGM-109 Tomahawk (the UGM-109 was not explicitly mentioned).

The submarine in question is believed to be the Type 093B.

According to a different set of rumors, the Type 093B and possibly Type 095 (assuming that they are different submarines) will adopt a canister-based VLS, with 8 cells per canister, akin to the Virginia Payload Module. They will be armed with the YJ-100 anti-ship cruise missile.

The UGM-109 is actually not the stealthiest cruise missile in US inventory. It is actually "unstealthy". The real stealthy cruise missile is the AGM-129 ACM as seen below:

And yes, the article never actually mention UGM-109, nor AGM-129 ACM, but it did mention that China now leads the world in cruise missile technologies.

But the US destroyed all their AGM-129 missiles. It went extinct in 2012. AGM-129 is pure an air-launch platform. There is no ship or sub based version unlike the Tomahawk. Tomahawk has ship/sub launch variants. Ground based version was withdrawn due the treaty requirement.

I guess the stealthiest cruise missile in the US arsenal would be JASSM and it variants, but the AGM-129 is no more.

Survivability would be the concern with 092, with the reliability of its missiles a secondary concern. 092 may "only" be 29 years old, but that's a lifetime in terms of Chinese military technology in general, and submarine and missile technology in particular. At this point the sole 092 is practically a burden, and I expect it to disappear the moment the first 096 is ready.

I don't believe China will have a truly reliable nuclear deterrent until the 096 class is in service (in numbers, i.e. at least four boats) with JL-3 missiles by 2025. And once they are China will want to move straight onto their successors (096B or 098) to replace 094 in the nuclear deterrent role and counter developments in ABM systems. The 094s could be converted to SSGN or special ops platforms in the mould of the early Ohio boats.
