Currently, based on public open source material, preferrably from China's own mouth, where are the PLAN's submarine forces? I don't particularly care about Mings and Romeos... they're so old that it wouldn't suprise me to see them all sunk for coral reefs in the Gulf of Tonkin, but the Songs and greater class types.

Additionally, who can tell me something about the formation of new submarine flotillas? With the number of subs set to be built, based on current trends, the PRC is sure to need more control points.

Well, the basic info is always same. There are three SSK bases: Huludao (North Sea Fleet), Zhoushan (East Sea Fleet), and Yulin (South Sea Fleet). Qingdao is the base for the nuclear subs. Each base homes a sub flotillas, although these subs may be stationed in other naval ports temperarily.

I doubt that you will get any decent info here. Most members here (including me) live abroad and have only limited info through public sources, while those who really know this kind of classified info will be very careful ;)

What do you suppose the advantage of having a headquarters at Huludao actually is?

While my guess is: historically Huludao has been an important naval port in Northern China. It was originally built in Russia in the early 20th century. Also Huludao Shipyard is the only shipyard in China that can build nuclear submarine.

Interestingly, although all nuclear subs are built at Huludao, they are actually based at Qingdao. Nuclear subs sail to Huludao regularly for routine maintenance and refits. The subs permenantly based at Huludao are actually SSKs.

Also uncofirmed report indicated that there is a second nuclear sub base in Southern China, but this cannot be confirmed.

More better ships need to go to the South and North Fleet.

The East Fleet has all of the good stuff. The Songs, the Kilos, the Yuans.

At least the South is finally getting some Kilos, and maybe some Songs.......

Man...... I don't like the distribution of ships in PLAN.......

I was under the impression that the Yuan wasn't even in service yet, outside of sea trials and testing. Does their pennant (SSK 330) denote ESF subordination?

Well, I thought that when they complete testing, it was going to the East Fleet.....

If it's numbered 330, what fleet is it following?(Or does it belong to the Power projection fleet?)

I wonder if it was the sub that nearly sunk in that test though....

No actually, the East Fleet is the one that will bear the responsibility for taking on Taiwan. That is why it has the best stuff.
