I am sure that's a pertinent question in 1947 but if we are all viewing the situation today via UN and UNCLOS, then there's only one China with Taiwan only reunifying under peaceful means right?

But that doesn't change the fact that both sides have the same claim and it undermines what the Vietnamese claim. Furthermore, it shows what the general American attitudes about who owns the islands were at the time.

The Americans didn't really care about SCS sovereignty in '47, and wouldn't care all that much today but for China making real progress in its version of the Monroe Doctrine.
Informative pictures but thought it necessary to point out per the first caption that those four other nations have also built upon reefs and islands claimed by China. By definition overlapping territorial claims means everyone is offending everyone else, unless one takes sides.
