China's southernmost city is preparing to plant 500,000 trees within the year in a new "greening of the islands" initiative.

Sansha's geography in the South China Sea means the city's forest-building plans face challenges, including transportation of tree seedlings, limited fresh water supplies and extreme weather, such as typhoons, Xinhua reported.

But the tree planting is vital as the forests will provide a good windbreak and prevent shoreline erosion, improving the city's ecology and benefiting residents, officials said.

Coconut and casuarina trees are the plants of choice, as they have a high survival rate in the area's hot, humid, salty and high-radiation conditions.

Last year, about 300,000 trees were planted on islands and reefs, and 90 percent survived, turning the desert islands into green ones.

Sansha also promoted an "Internet plus tree" adoption activity to netizens. For 300 yuan ($46) per year, participants could own a coconut tree on the city's Zhaoshu island, according to media reports.

Didn't someone or some article a while back brought up planting mangroves?

Jinqing (Drummond) Island dated 6 March 2016.

I have seen plans for Jinqing Island where an airstrip is planned, but so far I don't see much development in this regard.

I believe that this is the location of the new military base that Indonesia is planning to build in the Natuna Islands. Media reports have said that the plan is to base it around an airstrip that has yet to be refurbished, this is the only one that I could find.

I love how they start off, misleadingly, with a bunch of images of Fiery Cross when this is actually a story on Woody Island.

Chinese fighter jets seen on contested South China Sea island, evidence of Beijing's latest bold move

The Chinese military has deployed new fighter jets to a contested island in the South China Sea and bolstered their advanced surface-to-air missile system on the island, new satellite imagery provided exclusively to Fox News shows. The move is expected to escalate tensions in the region days before Defense Secretary Ash Carter visits the Philippines, where China’s recent provocative actions in the region are expected to be a point of discussion.

...

The satellite photos also show a newly installed fire control radar system on Woody Island, which makes China’s surface-to-air missile launchers first deployed in February fully operational. The U.S. military is concerned the new radar allows China to track U.S. fighter jets, bombers and intelligence gathering aircraft keeping an eye on the Chinese military. The photos from ImageSat International show four of the eight surface-to-air missiles ready to fire on the eastern side of Woody Island.

Satellite imagery from ImageSat International (ISI) taken on April 7 and authenticated by U.S. defense officials Tuesday show two Chinese Shenyang J-11 fighter jets on Woody Island. The Chinese J-11s, known as “Flankers” by the Pentagon first entered service in 1998. They are a modified version of the Russian Sukhoi Su-27, comparable to a U.S. Air Force F-15 or Navy F/A-18 Hornet.

...

China has deployed J-11s to Woody Island on separate occasions recently. Fox News reported one deployment in late February, when Secretary of State John Kerry was hosting his Chinese counterpart in Washington. In November, Chinese state-run media showed photos of J-11s on Woody Island as well.

The hypocrisy is also breathtaking.

So, is perfectly fine that the US is sending military assets to China's doorstep to 'keep an eye on the Chinese military', but China trying to keep track of these foreign military assets right on its doorstep is somehow a massive provocation?!
