NO kidding.

Maybe that upper pic is a Sr. NCO chewing some backside over it.

Could be.. I gotta be honest with you fellows. I've notice a marked improvement from the PLAN on their photos. These above photos are just excellent. EXCELLENT!

One last thing. I wonder why that cargo net is on the deck.

Just a question regarding that AEW-version ! Given that (sadly only single) image and esp. that bat-badge ... can we already assume this type to be operational or at least to enter service soon ??? ... or am I again to impatient ?

I do not know Deino. I am sort of like you in this...I would believe a squadron was either being stood up or already had if I could see more pictures...some evidence of it.

Maybe when the Liaoning comes out of its yard time and goes to see (after the shake down), we will see.

Thanks ... or my just following my stomach-feeling I think they already formed some kind of Operational Conversion Unit - or at least detachment - that prepares the crews for the later operational service but sadly so far we've only seen that single image.

Overall I would be interested to know if this unit (or if all units based on a carrier, esp. the J-15 unit) will be new units and what designation they will have or if they will be assigned to existing units and only form operational detachments.

Currently all PLANAF Z-8's are assigned to the 5. AR / 2. Naval Air Division (former 6. Indep. AR - 9xx6-serials) based at Qingdao-Licang (NSF) and the 26. AR / 9. Naval Air Division (former 7. Indep. AR - 9xx7-serials) based at Sanya (SSF).

This is not a cargo net. The net is meant to prevent the helo, the men and any equipment or stuff from sliding.

Just to illustrate the thing with nets on helipads – i.e. they are not cargo nets but ones to keep things in place/ prevent sliding on deck – here such an arrangement with nets can be seen on a RusNav vessel. The picture is from RIA Novosti as the watermarks show. KamovNetDeck.jpg

Russian-Chinese naval exercise. East china sea – the title says it all – can be seen at:

One can see among other thing PLAN helos. From about 02 :01 a Chinese Ka 28 pilot talks. In brief he praises the Ka 28 and sends greetings to the viewers.
