Hehehe...loved that movie. And it was actually filmed during RIMPAC 2012.

Looking forward to the sequel.

But in the mean time, next week we'll just have to settle for Star Trek: Into Darkness!

In reality humanity will be totally porked in such a scenario...the time it'd take humanity to get their acts together under a single banner advanced aliens will have Earth conquered.

Back to topic...

Since the PLAN won't be invited into the combat part of the RIMPAC exercise (not even at OpFor, no way), there's next to no sense to send any combat ships; the ongoing anti-piracy expedition will hold up at least 4 warships (2 already on duty and 2 in preparation to take the baton), plus it also held up the small fleet of AO ships so hardly any left to spare for such a trip; that leaves the most suitable candidate is a 071 LPD...

I say send in the Type 094 SSBN.

To test the ASW and anti ASW of both sides and to improve the PLAN future SSBNs.

A good chance to learn and improve on your weaker subjects!

Please tell me you're joking.

Just for laugh...

Comd RIMPAC: This is Comd RIMPAC to Comd NSF, the exercise has started and yet to see your ship. Where is your ship?

Comd NSF: They have arrived didnt they?

Comd RIMPAC: We cant see the ship!

Comd NSF: Of course you cant see the ship! We better keep it that way. Find them if you can.

:D:D:D

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China's People's Liberation Army has accepted an invitation to participate for the first time in a major U.S.-hosted naval drill, but legal restrictions will limit its role to less sensitive exercises, like disaster relief, U.S. officials say.

Beijing's agreement to join the drills being held next year comes at a moment of heightened tensions between China and U.S. ally Japan over disputed East China Sea islets, and unease in the United States about China's rapid military buildup and its cyber capabilities.

The Rim of the Pacific exercise, known as RIMPAC, is billed as the world's largest international maritime exercise, with 22 nations and more than 40 ships and submarines participating the last time it was held off Hawaii in 2012.

Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter acknowledged China had agreed to participate in RIMPAC during a little-noticed speech on Wednesday in Jakarta. Carter said he was "delighted that they have accepted" the American invitation, extended last year by then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

"We seek to strengthen and grow our military-to-military relationship with China, which matches and follows our growing political and economic relationship," Carter said.

Several interesting points from the full article:

1) The acceptance came by way of a speech in Jakarta, not an official correspondence.
2) The US is indicating that there will be humantarian, maritime security and potential anti-pirating components of the exercises, all of which could involve the PLAN and not violate US law.
3) The 1st official planning meeting will be held in May (this month) where we may find out what the PRC initially plans to send.

With all being said, we don't even know if an invitation has been officially issued, and whether the PLAN accepted the invitation officially....

Actually, we do know that an official invite was extended.

Leon Panetta, then Secretary of Defense, announced in September 2012 that China was invited. This was reported on at the time, particularly by the US Amrmed Forces Press Service.

Armed Forces Press Services said:
BEIJING, Sept. 18, 2012 – Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and his Chinese counterpart, Defense Minister Gen. Liang Guanglie, told reporters here today they see progress and room for growth in the two nations’ military relationship.

During a news conference following small- and large-group meetings the two attended, Panetta said he informed the general today that “the United States Navy is inviting China to send a ship to participate in the RIMPAC [Rim of the Pacific] 2014 exercise.”

“These exercises enhance the ability of our navies to work together to confront the common threat of piracy,” Panetta said.

The only issue was wether or not China would accept. That question has now been answered according to the US Navy, given by the Chinese government at a PRC government speech in Jakarta.

China has accepted an invitation from the United States to participate, for the first time, in Rim of the Pacific naval exercises off Hawaii next year, the Pentagon said.

San Diego UT said:
March 23, 2013

A spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s Third Fleet in San Diego said U.S. officials were informed earlier this month of the Chinese Navy’s intentions.

“Each participating nation determines their level of participation and the training objectives for their forces,” said Navy Cmdr. Charlie Brown in an email. “The planning for RIMPAC 2014 is still in very early stages.”

It's pretty clear that officially they are coming.

Eh Jeff, I think we found out from an US official at Jakarta that China accepted the invite, not China annoucing her acceptance in Jakarta. ;)

My understanding, and this was from comments that one of the Deputy Secretaries or Commanders of the US Navy said, was that at Jakarta, in a presentation made by a high ranking PRC official, it was announced that the PLAN would be attending RIMPAC 2014 and was accepting the US invitiation. Excatly how that occurred in terms of who passed it along, at least to me, is immaterial.

As it stands, the US is moving forward with China coming and has announced openly as much, and the PRC has certainly not announced that this is a mistake. We do not know otherwise, outside of these announcements, what is happening back channels.
