Said to be the 40,000 replenishment tanker under construction

2015 is a massive year for PLAN, and a even bigger rally towards the end of the year

We've heard this 40,000 replenishment tanker rumor for a while now. It's supposedly being build at Guangdong shipyard. According to pop3, we should be able to see it launched as early as first half of next year.

No doubt this will be larger and faster than the current tankers and suited for the CSG

The ability to carry munitions, the safe storage for them, fresh water, aviation fuel and also for ships themselves

This will also provide the ability to deploy them comfortably for 6 months or more

The Type 903 units have done 6 months in Gulf of Aden but that's pushing them

I can't wait to see what this looks like

Over on CDF hmmvw pointed out an interesting stern of a ship in a photo that was posted a few days ago (on SDF, posted over in the shipbuilding thread by Jaybird)...
Could this stern be the first clear view of 901?

Google earth imagery of a suspected 901 at early stages of construction at GSI also shows a ship with a beam of 31.5m... which is substantially larger than the 903/A's 24.8m beam, even larger than the UK's new Tide class tankers which have a beam of 28.6m, and is only slightly smaller than the USN's Supply class with a beam of 32.6m.

Interesting a good escort for a carrier strike group

Fast, long range and heavy load for weapons, aviation fuel, warship fuel and fresh water so the size does not surprise me

Type 903 has 3 rear oval openings
Type 904 has 4
Type 901 has 5

We were expecting this class. Chinese aircraft carriers are non-nuclear so they need also fuel for themselves, so the supply vessels will be larger compared with the flattops than those of USN, so in tonnage they will be about the same size.

Yes, I know we've been expecting 901 and I of course understand why such a ship is necessary...
I was merely saying that these pictures are very likely of 901 and describing the reasons to support that suggestion, such as larger beam etc.

Obviously I was quite aware that any 40k ton AOE would naturally compare similarly in dimensions to some USN AOEs as well.
