I sincerely hope the PLAN EMALs actually works. The USN EMALs system as installed aboard Gerald R Ford is as of yet questionable as far as I'm know. Not a single aircraft has been launched off the ship since it was accepted by the USN. In fact it has spent less than 10 days at sea in the last two months.

Very disappointing.

It takes time I guess. Maybe they just want to be cautious to avoid what happened to DDG1000 & LCS. Neither program work out well in my view. I would think Ford would end up better, but gotta walk before you can run.
What's remarkable is that Prof Ma scoffs at Ford's EMALS technology. Very rare in terms of confidence for Chinese engineers to do so. Reminds me of Elon Musk laughing at Wang Chuanfu's electric vehicle business a few years ago, only thing is he starts to copy what Wang has been doing now. Wang starts with the most impactful environmentally and economically, sold more and remain profitable while Mr. Musk keeps losing money.

Let's see whether prof Ma become the real winner!

Talking about Tesla: Prof Ma's charged comment can be seen as a continuation of War of Currents: China's system is DC based while US one is AC. Which one is the future?

Give it time my friend.

it's still very new...and lots of things to be worked out.

We know (and I know personally) that EMALS has worked very well at the New Jersey installation on all sorts of aircraft and differing loads and conditions.

We will see it, and they will work out well.

Easier installation with one set of four flywheels serving one catapult. On the carrier are three sets with four flywheels each serving four catapults and the distribution system failed several times.

I agree, DC being better than AC is one of the thing that makes Prof Ma so confident to make such comment. It is not a question that DC is the future, it is a conclusion reached by everyone including American researchers who is attempting to get there at this moment. Ma reached it first and now, that makes him saying what he said.

There are several post, which suggest, a decision on the Type 002 carrier's catapult has been reached in favour for the EMALS.
I am not sure about the decision has been made yet.

I believe these posts were made based on an internal lecture that Prof Ma made few days/weeks ago. Prof. Ma's original words as one participant in that lecture quoted was something like "President Xi personally ordered the postponement of 002's construction at the end of 2016 to give time for the EMALS land based test".

The participant added his own words as saying the "ordered postponement is to facilitate the competition between steam and EMALS." BUT he did NOT claim that Prof. Ma's original words mentioned competition and steam.

Problem is that the participant did not quote the original words, but re-tell Ma's words, making interpretation difficult.

So if we assume that there is a competition ongoing between steam and EMALS, then the decision of using EMALS is not yet made. But as re-told Ma's did demonstrate great confidence that EMALS will be chosen.

"Funny thing" is that the original cjdby thread (

) that talked about the lecture is now removed.

a translation of a summary of this talk was posted in another thread yesterday, it just hasn't been posted here yet.

These 3 are what I'm most excited about according to Professor Ma.:D:cool:

(1) More interestingly, the high speed submersible battleship concept, developed by another professor from the same school, is nicknamed as a "all-round" capable warship by General Ma; he told the students that such a ship will be equipped with laser/EM, railguns, and fully-electrified powertrain and transmission system.

(2)Most interesting part is: He mentioned that the ASBMs on such novel class of a battleship will be electromagnetically-launched, which means that such ASBMs will use much smaller boost-stage and overall weight and yet would still deliver the same amount of payload/range compared to their conventional counterpart.

(3)Note that electromagnetic-launched commerical rockets are also developed parallely by China Aerospace Science & Industry Corp, also using Ma Weiming's electromagnetic -launch technology:
