Are you sure "001A" was a leaked designation from official sources? It could just as easily have been a designation created by the same state television employees.
Interesting post but don' t need going for details... in more difficult with China but i need udapte my " Mandarin " for going more often on the Weibo :)

the 002 is still in the technical design stage, which is followed by the manufacturing design (or design for manufacture) stage, the latter of which can occur concurrent with parts and materials ordering.

Im not surprised by this. How could the carrier be already under construction, if the catapult technology is still under development?

You got it wrong both catapult system have completed development. We seen both of them are installed at Huangdichun which is pilot training facility. The hard part is which one to use
The steam is definitely the more mature But EM Cat has its advantages too

He didn't say 002 is already under construction.

He said 002 is still in the technical design stage.

I'm not sure where you read from his post that it was under construction.

Also the catapults should be well past the development stage by now. The entire point of the catapult competition was thought to be to choose one for the navy to go with for 002. Given the latest info from pop3 that jobjed has kindly translated for us, there is some reason to suspect 002 may be being altered for the EM cat rather than the steam cat.

He's a former PLAN officer. He lives and breathes OpSec. If it's not declassified, he doesn't speak of it. Earlier this week there was a state television piece on PLAN AIP submarines, the existence of which was taken as de facto truth for a long time but never officially confirmed. Thus, pop3 never said anything about PLAN AIP subs. Then the television piece broadcasted and bam, he immediately posted a brief history of PLAN AIP research and utilisation. A lot of the times, he's just waiting for the topic to become declassified, then he gives info on it.

It's better to delay the construction.
Now chance is getting higher and higher for us to see CV/N-18 with EMALS.

by the way, any translation for Pop3's post about history of PLAN AIP research and utilitisation?
It's very interesting.
Thanks in advance

It seems there is still no consensus on the final design of the CATOBAR carrier.

EMALS will need additional electrical power, This has to be taken into account because there is a balance between various services (propulsion, combat systems, navigation systems, general utilities) and all of this will have an impact on the ship range.

It was said earlier that 002 would get conventional propulsion system, but we know that using nuclear power also implies major redesign, and current evidences points to conventional propulsion system.

Whether power to the cats is delivered as steam or electricity will not significantly influence the ships range. Probably the fuel cost of steam cats is higher than that of EM cats.

In response to his revelation that 002's design hasn't been finalised, someone asked how that could be considering the multitude of rumours that claimed the opposite. Pop3 responded; 1) the technical design hasn't been completed, 2) the so-called "finalisation of design" is a faux jargon that was given by industry outsiders. A true finalisation of design would entail design certification which is given only after the design in question has been built, put into service, and used for a few years so that all its bugs and quirks are known. Right now, the 002 is still in the technical design stage, which is followed by the manufacturing design (or design for manufacture) stage, the latter of which can occur concurrent with parts and materials ordering.

To consolidate, I think the probability of our seeing the first 002 being built with EMALS is getting higher and higher. The "one thing" that pop3 says caused the delays in finishing the technical design is most likely the choice of catapult type.

A good debunk of such false claims.

Around the issue of catapult, one false claim is the so-called "design has been frozen for steam", the other similar one is "steam being more mature (for China)".

I am always "fascinated" by some people over the internet doing this kind of things, essentially they fabricate a false and baseless claim, dress it up as "scientific fact" to propagate their wish (steam cat used on 1st CATOBAR carrier of PLAN".

It would make perfect sense in a political or economical propaganda war that gives benefit in return. But what kind of benefit would they get from PLAN CV construction? Something they are not able to influence anyway. The behavior is close to insanity.
