Zhou Bingwu makes breakthrough in compatible fire of naval gun

english.chinamil.com.cn 2008-05-08

Zhou Bingwu (left) studying together with other technical personnel on compatible fire plans of naval gun.

The reporters learnt recently from a military representative office of the Armament Department of the PLA Navy that Zhou Bingwu, a senior engineer of this office, has tackled problems in key technologies, such as shell cases got jammed in gun barrel, and enabled one naval gun barrel to fire different types of artillery shells with different calibers, and realized automatic loading of separate-loading ammunition. At the end of April, this achievement passed the technical evaluation after it was put to test in a live ammunition range practice.

The naval gun experts at the range located at the northern foot of the Yin Mountain were amazed at this achievement, and they held that this achievement would turn naval gun into a multifunctional launching platform and make the gun be able to launch precise attack against long- and middle-distance targets automatically and from multi-directions, thus it is going to bring new life to naval guns. Cai Yuquan, leader of the naval gun expert team excitedly said, "This achievement has filled a technical blank in naval gun's firing field." At present, this achievement is in the process of applying for national scientific and technological innovation award.

Zhou Bingwu is over 50 years of age now and he started to carry out research on naval gun in 1993. Fiver years ago, he went to Beijing to report to the higher level on his research program of firing multi-types of shells with a single naval gun. In early 2005, the application for the development of a new type of large caliber ship-gun was approved, and a military-civilian joint research task force was established accordingly.

In US Navy service the Oto 76mm Compatto has proven to be grossly unreliable. If used at it's published 90 round per minute rate of fire it self destructs. The USN tested Goalkeeper many years ago and found it to be difficult to maintain and prone to break downs. The current USN opinion is that the Bofors 57mm gun is the best gun under 100mm. It will be the point defense gun on the Zumwalt class and will arm several new classes of ship including the new Legend class cutters and the LCS.

from the news, it looks like China has finished the development of the 130 mm gun which is to be equipped on future destroyers. It might be based on AK-130 from the Sovs. My last post on this on this page gives a description of the gun.

well, anything can have it, 054A is clearly equipping AK-176M right now. I'm sure they will use it wherever it is needed. Based on AK-130 on Sov, it seems most logical 130 mm will be used there.

This is great news not only for the Chinese Navy but also in the field of development of naval tech. This might revolutionize the current role of naval guns and current naval tactics and practices.

This also opens the door for new markets of systems and subsystems based on the recent development.

I hope the article was just more thorough in the details of the development.

Well unless the new 130mm would be considerably lighter than any current existing 5 inch calibre automatic cannon or more spesifically lighter than the existing single barrel 100mm gun in chinese inventory, it wont be fitted to 054A series of Frigates. 054A Has the AK-176 becouse apparently the VLS system adds so much weight to the bow that it was no longer possiple to field the larger 100mm gun in the bow without having major balancerisk. Thus lighter weapon was choosen instead.

Now the chinese new 130mm gun will most likely around 24ton weight class so that pretty much dictates where it can be fitted and where not.

I've never seen this before, a new type CIWS of the PLAN? Along the rope, I can see a plastic plate with four Chinese characters. I can read only the last two "勿近": meaning "don't get near"

Come on! What would Chinese characters be doing on a Russian ship?

This was taken aboard the 998. The CIWS looks like AK630.
