PLAN close in weapon

Yeah I'm gonna go on a limb here and say Varyag when it enters service will have one of the most capable if not the most capable organic ciws of any carrier.
Hell it'll probably the most capable carrier outside of the Nimitz class simply due to size, defenses and the massive array of sensors at its disposal (yes I'm including the De Gaulle, India's conventional carriers, Kuznetsov, Wasp class and maybe even the QE depending on its airwing).

doesn't matter if it is on Varyag or not.
This is arguably will be one of the biggest-badest-gun-CIWS-in-service...evverrr.

Only way you can top this is make a monster 40mm gatling gun or something like that.

Just curious ...

What could be the reason for the PLAN to develop a new(er) CIWS? Is there a deficiency (of capability) with existing Type-730?

Also, is there any new photo of the starboard side of the Varyag recently? Come to think of it, we have only seen the port side for sometime now. I guess given where she is now it is not possible to get a starboard view. Would be interesting to see the elevators and (hopefully) some sign of the hanger :)

I think the Type 730+ will only be used on carriers or maybe other larger vessels while the baseline 730 will be used for smaller vessels?
It's just one of those things that should keep improving, like the accuracy of rifles, range of missiles etc. I imagine it wouldn't have been immensely difficult to add a couple of barrels to the existing type 730 either.

I think 11 barrels, if it is so, is a bit of overkill (even though it's immensely awesome) compared to other single barrel ciws like phalanx, goalkeeper or ak 630.

Man what is the definition of "single barrel"? - Regarding phalanx, goalkeeper and ak630 being single barrel.

As for the 11 barrel monster, I say it is "THE FATE OF THE 2ND BEST", cause you are facing the threat from THE BEST , all the way from port to ocean?

I am wandering without solid proof, that the upgrade from 7 to 11 barrels, is not just "simplly improve performence" and not "simplly put more barrels spin together"... the bottle-neck I can think of: Auto-loader is one of the meanest requirement; as well as "munition selector"... heat dumping would be a problem also...

That means you have to break ALL THESE bottle-necks, to deliver THAT!!!

Edit: That's on the assumption, that you ("you" is literature 2nd person view, not you "Bltizo") are not considering the whole thing, GLASS MOCK UPS or something... (wood maybe)

^ Single barrel, meant to say single gun.

And dude I have no idea what you're trying to say in almost all your posts...

.... (never mind)

Besides, some said, you won't remember Shakespeare in this day, if he did not wrote the way he has. (not that I am comparing myself to him) lol.

Edit:

Come on! guys! Should I say it as plain as "The 2nd best" is China, and "The best" is uncle sam, and uncle sam is a threat to China's new carrier from the time she hit the water in the home port, to the very middle of the ocean.... So that the "11 barrels" monster CIWS is a MUST, to have?

Must I have to say it as plain as THAT? I mean WTF? Because of "English skills"?

Care to quote which exact part that you don't get it?

So that I can "spell it right"?

If you insist...

I understand this part.

What do you meamn by the fate of the 2nd best...?

So you don't think the extra barrels is just to improve performance... then why add the barrels?
(Do you mean more barrels = less barrel per heat for the shooting the same number of bullets?)

That means you have to break ALL THESE bottle-necks, to deliver THAT!!!

What bottlenecks, to deliver what?

Edit: That's on the assumption, that you ("you" means anyone, not you Bltizo) are not considering the whole thing, GLASS MOCK UPS or something... (wood maybe)

Are you taking a shot at naysayers/skeptics in general here? I don't see why you're bringing them in when no one mentioned any of that...

I just find it hard to understand large portions of your posts and it's hard to reply to them... But maybe it's only me.

Bltizo, feedback is always appreciated.

The "2nd best" part, I have edited at #96.

The upgrading from type 730, to (let's say) type 1130, what I meant to say, is "THIS IS A HUGE LEAP!", "NOT ONLY simply upgrade".

It is technology bottle-necks you have to breakthrough, in order to deliver something with "11 barrels, 10000 rpm" - those like HEAVIER DUTY AUTO LOADER; SMARTER "MUNITION SELECTOR"; BIGGER ASS HEAT SINKER bla bla bla... (during WWII, we have already had 76mm tank guns, but to produce a tank gun that is 120mm in modern day ("only" 44mm larger), what BREAKTHROUGH you have to made? - the same rational applies to 7 barrels into 11 barrels)

And yes, basicly I entertain myself when I found ANY CHANCE, to slap the face of the naysayers.

Correct me if I am wrong, the reasons to have more barrels is because it cools the barrels and prolong the barrel's life. I think technology already exist to fire 10,000 rounds per minute from a single barrel - the problem is it will melt that barrel well before that 10,000 rounds are fired. That's why the rotating barrels design.

China's Type 1030 CIWS fires over 10,000 rounds/min.

A closer look at the barrels of China's Type 1030 CIWS

Seems like they've increased the number of barrels and possibly caliber as well. It probably means that they are looking to emphasize its rate of fire and service life of the barrels.
