I wonder if it will be going into the Arctic or Antarctic on her first mission.:)
Well, most countries that need them have Coast Guard ice breakers, some navies have them, and then there are also commercial ones.

The US navy transferred all of its ice breakers to the US Coast Guard in the 1950s. Currently, the US Coast Guard has three large Ice Break Cutters and 11 ice breaking cutters (2 x 225' WLB and 9 x 140' WTGB) on the Great Lakes.

China has, in addition to these new PLAN cutters, one large cutter in the Polar research Institute of China.

The Russians have always had a very large Ice Breaking fleet. Right now it consists of six nuclear powered and 20 diesel-electric icebreakers. Their Navy is building four new diesel electric ice breakers, and they are building two new huge nuclear powered ice breakers commercially.

The JMSDF has one ice breaker, but also its Coast Guard operates several.

The Canadian Navy is building 5 or 6 Arctic Patrol Boats that will be able to perform ice breaking, but also have several in their Coast Guard.

The Royal Navy has one ice breaker, but also two aucillary service ice breakers.

Of course in most of the sea faring countries there are also commercial ice breakers which can assist when necessary.

No reason to think it. Not like the govt or military to boast about new technology if they're not at an advanced stage in development.
I think this is a project by Rear Admiral Ma.

Anyway, we've had rumours for the last few years of significant advancements in these areas, so if anything, these announcements should be expected.

Yep. One thing that is still ubiquitous to Chinese govt, military and state institutions as well as Chinese private business, is their inability to properly market something.

They seriously need better fact checkers. To be fair, however, India and Russia made similar mistakes before with JF-17s and J-10s, respectively.

To be fair, I can understand why they don't put much effort into marketing. After all they're not selling it to the public, nor do they particularly care about portraying their information accurately to the public, when it is the actual hardware which matters to the military, and marketing is unnecessary for the military itself.

I've got to say the claims in the quoted paragraph are rather bold or astounding if true. For the marine IES, it says the system built by Ma and his team "has leaped forward and surpassed" that of foreign ones, and has become the vanguard of the international IEPS development. For the EMALS, it claims that their system has caught up with the "most advanced" international development (presumably the US EMALS).

Even if we discount somewhat these claims, they still represent significant developments in these fronts, given that Professor Ma and his team have won multiple awards - among some of the highest state and private ones - for their breakthroughs.

Those claims are actually pretty consistent with the reporting of these developments (IEPS and EM cat) in the last few years. By the consistent sound of things, it seems quite plausible that it is viable.

Reading between the lines, what they're essentially saying is that their development in IEPS and EM cat tech has reached the forefront of current international competition, which isn't too unrealistic given the relative lack of many major players in those domains, especially for EM cat.
