I take such a report with a grain of salt.

China could conduct a simulated attack from hundreds of miles away. Without going active with some sort of sensors, no one would knw unless someone simply leaked information.

So all you end up with is unconfirmed reports from unnamed sources usually.

IMHO, this is news hype.

Washington Free Beacon makes some pretty outlandish claims from time to time, as do other outlets.

In this case, both the US Navy and the Chinese government spokesperson basically told the reporters that there was n comment on any such claim.
Let's not dismiss the notion such leaks came from some in the DoD to gin up China threat for bigger budgets.

In order to do that, it need not be a leak at all...just an un-sourced, un-named individual speaking about something that might not ever have happened.
Gretz said the Navy briefed Congressional officials in this quote:
Navy officials recently briefed congressional staff on the incident that took place during the weekend of Oct. 24—days before the Navy warship USS Lassens sailed within 12 miles of disputed Chinese islands in the South China Sea, triggering vocal criticism from Beijing.
That's pretty specific information, with dates but no names, and it doesn't look like an embellishment.

If the Chinese SSK/SSN had wished to conduct an exercise of such sorts, it could've easily done so with a PLAN vessel and avoid risking misunderstanding on an international level. This maneuver, if it really did happen, was more political and postural than anything else.

A darker thought is it was intentional to test US responses, gauge PLAN equipment, and train submarine personnel.

Actually, it is not very specific.

Other than saying it happened "days before" the Lassen sailed into the SCS, the specificity is about the Lassen, which we all know. The only indication is that the simulated attack by the PLAN SSN was when the Reagan was in the Sea of Japan.

As I say, the Chinese SSN simulating the attack could have been in port for all we know...and certainly did not light the Reagan up actively. We would have hear of that in detail.

So, what briefing that was held in Congress is still, IMHO, extremely sketchy.

Perhaps something did occur...if so, I will wait and read the actual Congressional record to see what level of specificity, and what actually was said.

I still believe it is a story that is being embellished by the press.

Well Washington Free Beacon were right so far right about China's HGV testings reports and they're usually the first to post it as well. I'm just sayin.
