It says for 20th anniversary of US carrier entering taiwan strait lol.

I served aboard USS Midway in 1973-'74. We operated in the Taiwan Straight in Febuary of 1974 for several days. In fact we were to visit Keelung ROC..however..

Popeye's Sea Stories

On Midway we went to Keelung, Taiwan(in FEB '74) but got no liberty. Why? At that time the harbor was not deep enough for us to anchor close in. So where we anchored was a 45 minute boat ride into shore. According to the word past no ferry could be hired to take the crew on liberty..cost too much...so we were told....so we went to Subic instead!...then on to Hong Kong...sweet!

back in the day.. long before most of you Padwans were born...

For me...some forthcoming big milestones for the 1st indigenous PLAN Carrier:

1. Completion of the wide portion of the flight deck for the angle deck...stern to the launch point.
2. Addition of the Ski-jump on the bow.
3. Addition of the weapons sponsons around the vessel.
4. Addition of the Island.

Once all of those are in place she will look like the carrier she is.

Still lots of internals to do at that point before launch...but all of that in place will be very exciting for the Chinese people and naval enthusiasts.

I like that they have a dedicated Muslim mess deck as well, probably for Halal foods.

Given China does have a not insubstantial Muslim population especially in the Hui ethnic group, and the Navy and Liaoning itself likely has a good number of Muslim sailors as well so it's important to respect those aspects of their culture and religion when possible.
