The first Chinese cruiser is not even building, if you can call 055 a cruiser class. Else, the first Chinese cruiser might or might not being designed.
"Cruiser" in a general newspaper is synonymous with any warship. This can be a battleship, a cruiser, a destroyer, a frigate or a corvette. It might even be a "flat deck cruiser".

This sounds like the same conjecture from two months ago claiming CV-16 was in port in Syria when in fact she was in China.
It refers to the same old message.

I read the article with amusement. I have not earlier read this paper but I know its reputation of writing rubbish and this is accord well with that reputation.

Maybe we will see some action, can anyone confirm the position of the liaoning?

Not the kind of action that article is referring to.

From the article:

Article said:
Russian media followed that up by quoting Igor Morozov, a member of the Russian Federation Committee on International Affairs, confirming Chinese aircraft carrier, Lianoning, and a guided missile cruiser were heading to the area, and adding Chinese military advisers were already in the region.

Mr Morozov said: "It is known that China has joined our military operation in Syria.

"The Chinese cruiser has already entered the Mediterranean, followed by its aircraft carrier."

These reports have not been verified by China and satellite images show the Syrian port of Tartus, currently empty.
This has been proven false.

The Liaoning is not in the Med. It has never been in the Med or anywhere near it.

There is no Chinese cruiser is in the Med...the Chinese do not even have a cruiser.

Chinese destroyers have been in the Med, but never with the Liaoning.

The Liaoning has not ever even fielded a complete air wing on the carrier.

We have seen them test with a maximum of five J-15s. Although the Liaoning can carry 20 or more J-15s, only 15 J-154s have been built to date.

So, the action we can expect to see from the PLAN with the Liaoning is hopefully, more training exercises. More J-15s operating off of her in those training exercise.

All of that...at this time...will occur most probably in the South or East China Sea...or somewhere in the Western Pacific.

We look forward to the day that the PLAN takes her on some kind of goodwill trip to the Atlantic, Med, etc.

As to her doing combat operations in the Med against Syria...it is very highly unlikely and certainly has not occurred yet.

Either that news outlet, or Mr. Morozov are very sadly...and completely...mistaken.

I suggest we ignore any notion that Liaoning is going to be directly involved in Syria, actually any notion that China is going to be directly involved in ME.

These notions, to my thinking, is either someone want to divert terrorists' attention to China to save ones own ass, or some hot-headed Chinese fanboys who want to show "I have a big stick" due to excessive hormone. Chinese government is not that stupid.

You see? It is this kind of so-called "news" quoting top Russian officials makes us question any news about China coming out of Russia, including the so-called "Su-35 purchase". This time, the news was quoting a top Russian official and had been proven to be absolutely false. So where is the credibility of a company executive in the case of the latest Su-35 joke?

Really? True that Liaoning has not been in the Mediterranean..however in her previous life as Varyag she has. Remember gents she was towed from the Ukraine via the MED, Atlantic etc...etc... Quite an adventurous voyage.

That's why I was very careful to say that the Liaoning never has.

When the former Varyag went through the Med, there was no Liaoning.

As you may be aware, I have kept a very detailed account of the:

They do not put all of the aircraft in the hanger. They clear the deck (particularly of ice when necessary as you can see in the fourth photo), and when necessary, conduct flight operations Ice, snow, fog, rain...all notwithstanding.

Popeye, to whom you were replying, spent well over 20 years on US carriers working with aircraft. He knows exactly what he is talking about. He is not really dissing Russia or anyone else...he is simply stating the facts of carrier operations from one who has done it on the most active, most advanced carriers in the world.

I know flight operations are taken under bad weather. Didn't know they can do that even when the deck is frozen with ice which is quite amazing. That's some thing new learnt thanks Jeff.

And I fully agree with what popeye said as you can see in my another post.

Exactly...And IF Liaoning was ever truly deployed to the MED that would be headline news. I'm guessing that right now she is in her homeport.

Will Liaoning ever make a deployment to the MED? One of the big problems for such a deployment would be logistics. Although China has sent other ships to the MED and to the Baltic & UK. Only time will tell if the PLAN could do such a deployment.
