Either way, it is good to see more of the Liaoning operating with more J-15s.

I hope later this Spring and then this summer to see more, with up to six production J-15s operating off of the Liaoning.

These photos along with the last photos with 4 J-15's look like they are scans of hard copies, like newspaper pics??? If it is, then that means these would be officially published pieces, which suggests that they would be taken at an earlier time?

I agree.

Probably all related to that exercise we saw earlier with the first four production aircraft on deck.

But I believe we are going to be seeing more.

PLAN is getting there they are working hard on this

Come to think of it the picture of those 4 J-15's we saw weeks earlier were also from a magazine scan. Maybe its from the same issue.

Yes, the long warm up time need by boilers is a major disadvantage of steam propulsion. At the same time, this is a non-issue for a ship such as an aircraft carrier. It takes even longer for all the provisions and crew to get on board.

The key here is that China is not going to build just one carrier. China is going to build half a dozen, and the propulsion system on the 001A will most likely be the same design that's going to be used on those subsequent carriers, even nuclear ones.

Not likely when it comes to nuclear.

This first one will most likely have a conventional power unit that, since they are building it from scratch and is there own, represents a conventional improvement over the Liaoning, and it will be a STOBAR carrier.

My own expectation is that they will then use that same type of propulsion for a couple of CATOBAR carriers before taking the final step to a nuclear powered CATOBAR carrier.

Much less risk in that type of plan which allows them to get their carrier force built up, and to do so while maximizing their logistics and training, and minimizing the risk that their first nuclear powered carrier will bring.

But...time will tell.

I think the second one will have significantly more advanced propulsion, perhaps CODAG or COGAG, I don't think the Chinese will apply the same outdated propulsion for the second carrier (Steam turbines)

So just we're all on the same page, construction on the second aircraft carrier HAS been confirmed by the pictures right?

Not for me.

We know they are building a large vessel...and it looks military and certainly could be a carrier or an LHD.

But I would not say it has been confirmed yet.

Unless the PRC confirms it, or over the next months it becomes more obvious...it is still up in the air from my perspective.
