I thought the correct answer has to do with ergonomics - In the event the pilot has to make an emergency maneuver, it's easier to push the control stick to the left (towards the sea) than to pull to the right (towards the island tower). Try it yourself - you can't twist your wrist to the left easily compare to swing to the right (assuming you are right-handed). This is especially true in more ergonomically designed jets (such as F-16, F-22) where the control stick is to the right (side-stick).

Yes. That's exactly it that's why I said in case of a emergency the tendency is to veer left thereby avoiding the island.. and since like 99% of naval aviators are right handed that would be the case. Now if southpaws suddenly become the majority then we have to rethink the island placement LOL

What a catapult provides is the ability to launch fighters of heavier loads consistently under a variety of situations, and more importantly, is the ability to launch fixed wing AEW, which a ski jump carrier cannot reliably do. Organic fixed wing AEW I think is an essential capability future PLAN taskforces need to acquire, so therefore catapults are also something which is essential as well -- but it is also incorrect to say that a ski jump carrier doesn't offer anything to the PLAN.

.. and that is EXACTLY why I see PLAN going the traditional layout like USN carrier in their indigenous future carriers. Liaoning # '2' will have the ski ramp but PLAN is full flat deck CV and CVN all the way as far as their future carriers are concern!
This is especially true knowing that PRC has been experimenting with EMALS as well and it's only a matter of time before they also perfect that tech. No way they will put EMALS on a ski ramp! so as far as I can forsee Ski Ramp will go the way of the dodo bird in PLAN's future carrier.

Does anyone know what is happening to the Liaoning ? We haven't heard anything from that ship for weeks if not months now. Like we also haven't heard anything about the production of J-15's for some time now.

I don't think Liaoning is at port or in drydock, otherwise we would have had pictures of it, so I assume it's still out training... in which case, no news is probably good news.
J-15 production OTOH is also strangely silent.

In fact we haven't heard much about J-15 or J-16 production or anything from SAC in a while now. Not sure if that's because nothing has happened or if they're keeping a tight lid on things.

Today is Chinese New Year's eve, I find it hard to believe it is not in port. Lol.

To all our Chinese folks who are celebrating CNY, have a wonderful and prosperous new year. Don't gamble all your money away and "Gong Xi Fa Cai".

Maybe, in which case I'd be interested to see pictures.

Eventually the crew of Liaoning will have to do longer duration deployments at sea during celebrations like CNY, as well as other deployed PLAN ships in future, beyond the current handful of ships in Aden or otherwise in transit around the world...
So it isn't inconceivable for Liaoning to still be at sea atm. But it is photo evidence which we need to prove whether Liaoning is at port or not.
