Truly beautiful.

Apparently they set off firecrackers at the dockyard this afternoon, to celebrate the completion of the deck. Congratulations~ :D

Of course, no progress update is complete without the SketchUp model to go with it.

Yes...this is a significant milestone.

But there is still lots to do.

They still have to complete the deck and button it up (close it). Clearly they have some significant equipment they are still loading into the vessel which is why those large openings still exist in the flight deck.

They still have both elevators to add to the vessel.

They may have weapons/equipment sponsons to add on the other side...we just can't see there yet.

...and of course, they have the island to lift.

Once all of that is done, they have a LOT of wiring, plumbing, control, equipment, etc. to do internally just to get to the launch stage.

I expect launch will certainly not occur in 2016. It (IMHO) will be in 2017.

But time will tell, and there is no doubt that the PLAN is making very good. steady progress.

They might float CV17 this year and push the project harder, if China's political leaders feel the need to launch deterrence assets sooner.

I have very strong doubts about this.

The PLAN and the PRC leadership have been pretty strong on these major naval projects and not allowing them to be politicized, or influenced by such events.

That can always change...I'm just saying I do not expect it. There is really no need to.

Normally I'd agree with you, but a new article from Henry K. gave me pause. In it, he said Chinese leadership under President Hu pushed CV17 for deterrence purposes. Here's the link to the article:

Personally, I think they are waiting to see if this "deterrence" is needed or not. By that, I'm referring to the US presidential elections. I do not know which candidate China thinks is more detrimental their establishment of a sphere of influence, but they are aware that in the long run, their main rival is the United States.

America's foreign policy depends very much on which candidate is elected president in November. Already the USN sailed carrier groups through the South China Sea last month, and there is no doubt that China will try to prevent that from happening again. By the end of the year, they can easily slap on the island and launch 001A if they deem it necessary.

That's a decent article.

But I still do not see any reason to push an early launch by 2-3 months. it will still be 2018-2019 before it can be commissioned.

Also, I do not believe that a knee jerk in terms of having two carriers was paramount in the reasoning.

I think they always intended to have two STOBAR carriers.

They need to train people, they need to maximize the cost effectiveness of their logistical chain, they benefit from the same parts, and with two carriers that are so similar, they not only achieve a very desired thing of having two carrier groups available (which I believe they intended all along), but they also get all of the positives associated with similar training, similar parts and logistics, etc., etc.

Anyhow, there are only four months left in 2016, so we will find out pretty quickly.

Guys can you believe it China will have 2 carriers !!

Who remembers the CV-16 refit talk in 2006 ?

Man how time flys !!

It took longer to get the Liaoning refitted than it took to build a new one

Obviously that was the learning curve

24 X J15 X 2 = 48 fighter aircraft over the sky's for cover if needed

Not a bad force

If CV18 can take 36 that would mean 84 fighters !! Wow

China long road to carrier building

When the first blocks came together I said that this was a well rehearsed planned carrier building programme

But to be honest I didn't know then it was going to be so fast

From Dec 2015 to Jan 2016 they went from nothing to this

As if they have done this a 100 times

Impressive speed even more impressive programme

Wether it's launched in 2016 or 2017 in my opinion makes no difference irrelavent talk
