I stated in the previous thread That I thought the turntable was OK..or words to that effect. It's good for handling such a large aircraft as the Flying Shark. Very innovative by the PLAN.

I can see drawbacks. Such as if that turntable(TT) is to be kept clear it will eat up hangar deck spotting (parking) space. That will in turn reduce the size of the air wing. Will aircraft be stowed on the TT?? I don't feel the Chinese were planning on an CV with 80 aircraft any time soon. But never the less that's possibly two more aircraft the carrier could have in her airwing.

Plus maintenance..that TT is just one more thing that can malfunction. I'd like to see the machinery space for the TT.

All equipment aboard a CV needs regular maintenance other wise it will malfunction.

Check this out. You want catapults? Gotta do the maintenance!.

I didn't notice it immediately but now I have a couple of questions:
Am I to understand that the turntable is a Chinese innovation and not used in Adm K.?
Is there a turntable with both aircraft elevators?

I believe both has such things, the difference is that the lighting and painting that makes the one on Liaoning seems more obvious.

I happen to came across this video, not sure if it had been posted before or not, it is by CCTV 4 and showed some of the modification done to the aircraft carrier when it was first towed into China.



Note that the video is in Chinese. Sorry guys.

I don't think the turntable will eat up parking space as when the carrier is operational that place will have to be kept clear to maneuver/rotate aircraft onto the lift. Plus it looks like the aircraft is tied down while on the turntable so there is no reason why the turntable cannot be used as a parking spot itself.

If the turntable broke down the aircraft just have to be moved the old fashion way. The one drawback would be the spaced needed for the machinery to operate the turntable but maybe it can share some of the power supply used for the lift?

The turn table does turn. it allows them to turn the aircraft into the hanger deck.

The US has no such mechanism...and it is a big and complex mechanism that could fail or be damaged.

I have never seen such a mechanism on the Kuznetsov, but admittedly have not paid that close of attention to it. They may have one, but I was unaware that the did. Perhaps one of our Russian brothers could shed some light on it.
