PLA type 07 Camo

I noticed that no one has posted about the PLA's digital camo.

Their main camo is dark green, brown and black over a gray background. I really don't think it helps the soldiers. I can spot them easily. Why did the PLA choose this camo?

62 views and no replies. You guys think the type 07 camo makes the PLA soldiers invisible? LOL!

TBH I'm baffled at why the PLA chose that camo. It doesn't seem to help the soldiers blend in to their environments.

While I'd agree that the oceanic pattern of the 07 camo series are of dubious use, the rest were set to the various environments of China. Below is the description of the 07 camo series pull from Wikipedia:
Universal (Official name: 07 Universal Camouflage, "07 通用迷彩作训服"): Green, brown and black on grey background. This pattern is good for semi-urbanized terrain. It is the standard pattern for the PLA Ground Force and the PLA Air Force, and is being distributed to most of regular units. All officers and soldiers currently serving overseas or at multinational military events have received these uniforms.
Desert (Official name: 07 Arid Camouflage, "07 荒漠迷彩作训服"): Light khaki, dark brown and black on tan background. The original intent of this pattern was for desert or arid terrain, however it is actually issued as Winter Camouflage pattern regardless of terrain in north China. Footage of its cold weather parka had been seen on TV since late 2008, but the completed uniform was started to issue widely in late 2009.
Woodland (Official name: 07 Woodland Camouflage, "07 林地迷彩作训服"): Light yellow, medium brown and black on olive green background. It is designated for use in dense bush terrain or jungle, and is mainly issued to the PLA Second Artillery Corps for a couple of years before abandoned. Modified pattern will be reinstated to PLA Second Artillery Corps on May 2012.
Ocean (Official name: 07 Oceanic Camouflage, "07 海洋迷彩作训服"): Light blue, green and light khaki on medium blue background. It is being issued to the PLA Navy and Marine Corps in limited quantities, such as Spratly Islands garrison forces and Somalia anti-piracy naval task force.
Navy Blue: It is same cut but in plain dark blue color which is issued to all vessel crew of PLA Navy as working uniform.
Special Force Camo (Official name: 07 Special Force Camouflage, "07 特战迷彩作训服"): Nickname is "Type 07 Hunter Digital Camo". It is the pixelized pattern of Type 04 Special Force DPM camouflage, and solely used by recce units and special forces of PLA Army since 2010. It was firstly seen with elite CFS (the spec ops unit) formation of 38th Group Army, which also under the command of PLA General Staff HQ, during early rehearsal of 60th National Day in 2009.
Urban (Official name: 07 Urban Camouflage, "07 城市迷彩作训服"): dark green, light grey, and bluish grey on slate-gray background. Also known as PLAAF Digital Camo. It is adapted by PLA Air Force on Nov 2011. Summer uniform will be released on May 2012. Winter uniform with cold weather parka will be released on Dec 2013. Transition to new uniform should be completed by Dec 2014.

And there's one interesting thing I've heard about the 07 camo as well: some airsoft wargame players in HK managed to obtain a few sets of the 07 camo BDU, which they said less visible in NVG than the genuine US UCP pattern...given military grade NVG is restricted item, probably they were testing it out with older generation military NVG or civilian grade NVG.

Regardless of what pattern you have on your BDU (battle dress uniform) a soldier can always adapt to the environment quickly. Say for example you are a desert pattern uniform and is either in the jungle or woodlands environment, one can always cover oneself with foliage and vegetation on your BDU, k-pot (helmet), and weapon to blend in. Of course depending on the weather and season you have to reapply those foliage once in a while as they died out.

Think I left out some details, when I said "less visible", according to what those chaps told me, UCP "looks brighter" in the NVG, whereas the Type 07 camo is less visible.

True, but that also depends on whether it's a full moon at night or not. If there's no light for those NVGs to pick up on almost any kind of clothing will be hard to pick up in dense forest or jungle area.

Modern Chinese Camoflage patterns of the Type 07 family are a Pixilated Digital set based on a number of previoly proven PLA Camo color ways. For a Full sampling of PLA Camo see

Now I am going to try and go a bit detailed and include other patterns of the same class.
First the Worst Littoral.

Littoral Pattern is a Navy type in that it's often meant for seaborne use In most navies that issue such. the Color way used to hide the constent spots of paint and such that gets everywhere on a ship once on land though... It sucks. I am not even going to put up a sample for comparison It's so bad.

"Universal"

I say "Universal" But I In my own mind I label it as Urban. PLA Universal lacks Desert colors and is predominantly grey and Green. The Color way is almost Identical to there woodland Pattern. Now When you begin comparison the comparison ( Which was already made) is to US Army UCP. UCP is a Failed pattern. Although still used Any real Deployments change it out for Multicam. UCP was and is a urban pattern at it's heart. the root of it was a pattern called Urban track which can be seen here

. The Color way seems better suited to branding then concealment. Now MwRYum brought up NOD and UCP being poor in it. this is likely the case particularly for civilian versions the US military has admitted using some kind of Ir Treatment in the ACU issued to troops to keep IR signatures down. ( the Admissions came when warning troops about what kind of Detergent they could use to wash there uniforms as some include Brightening agents that ruin the treatment.
Now in my opinion Both type 07 Universal and UCP fail in being truly "Universal" patterns. type 07 Universal looks better suited to Urban and woodland.
For comparison A real Try at Universal I point to Multicam. Multicam was infact also in the UPC development program However it works well Desert Environments, anf Fair un both Woodland and Urban. Has been Widely adopted ( including rumor has it by some units in the PLA) So why does Multi work and UPC Fail? by using a set of color ways that work in both woodland and desert it allows transition. by allowing a degree of blending between colors and not limiting the plate to three or four colors but using a wider set of colors ( seven I believe). Multicam also blends in a number of orientations of the pattern At jumbling up vertical to horizontal stripes. All of this brings us to the heart of Camouflage it's true goal... to confuse the brain of the observer Not to creat invisibility but to make the wearer blend in as a kind of Static of the brain. The brain unsure of what it sees then creates what it thinks it should be seeing instead. Now Multicam is not a Pixilated pattern although it it Digital almost every camo pattern of the last decade is in fact digital being the product of a computer. China is known to have cloned Multicam there version being commercial and having a more pinkish hue With the history Of Chinese camo That means they might in the future produces a variant of there own for widespread issue.

Woodland to woodland to woodland. The Tag team death match of PRC vs vintage US? well no...
In terms of Color way PAP 07 and M84 are close damn close but then again So is PLA 07. M84 more or less started the woodland trend in the west and has been copied in the east as well so similarity's are to be expected. The slight gradiants between the them have to do with the fact that M84 was created based on US Flora well Type 07 series is A Asian pattern for China who due to local plants would differ in greens and browns based on local soil. M84 is a vintage piece though and as such no longer top of it's game it stands out in IR and it's blotches are well known.

DPM desert.
Chinese Desert pattern is one of the Darkest desert patterns I know, Is stands out in contrast to most Western and Eastern due to it's darkness. It takes it's color way form the PLA Highland Flecktarn version of a few years back. When compared German Flectarn Desert the Chinese are still very dark. This seems then possibly due to the soil of western China and Tibet. if China were to deploy in say North Africa or the middle east they might face issues with this pattern but at home it would via that logic work well.

Speak of the devil, CCTV recently showed new types of desert camouflage patterns for the Second Artillery Corps. Much lighter shade and blends in to their background so much better.

In such environment, A-TACS would perform better...the Chinese won't be stranger to A-TACS, commercial manufacturers have been churning out generics for wargame players on a budget, Tru-Spec for those who got more smackers to throw around.

China is the perhaps few nations on this planet that has a full-range collection of terrains, all within its borders.
