One last thing, I thought the add-on armor modules of (Type-99a?) were NERA (non-energetic reactive armor). I was mistaken. The actual composition of the add-on modules is far more exciting, and I apologize for not revealing it here.
That's interesting, it sounds like its not wholly ERA either. Maybe he's hinting at a specific combo of reactive armour/composite layers that works better as disturber and disrupter over previous add-ons of only ERA or NERA tiles.
I kind of wish they would do away with all ZTZ-99 variants and build a scaled-up variant of the VT5. No amount of armor enhancements will make up for that extremely poorly-designed side armor cheek and the "explosive nature" of the ammo carousel, not to mention that their ERA add-ons are of dubious quality/design as well.
Didn't Type 99A's turret design at least rectify the cheek armour issue of Type-96/99?

The design of the Type 99 seems like it is the most fluid tank on the planet right now with regular redesigns. at times it seems like every 6 months the PLA issues a new version with some new widget.

There's nothing wrong with the cheek, if you're referring to the area that mounts the grenade launchers. They function effectively as slat armor providing protection vs HEAT. If the PLA really thought that area was so vulnerable there is absolutely nothing preventing them from adding ERA tiles directly underneath the grenade launchers and/or adding ERA tiles to the frontal aspect of the turret gear racks.
