Qatar announced five-billion-euro order for seven warships from Italy

Qatar announced on Wednesday a five-billion-euro order for seven warships from Italy in the midst of a nearly two-month diplomatic crisis with neighboring Saudi Arabia and its allies.

“We have signed a contract on behalf of the Qatari navy to acquire seven warships from Italy for five billion euros ($5.9 billion),” Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said at a Doha press conference with his visiting Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano.

It follows the signing of a preliminary contract in June 2016 for the deal between the Italian group Fincantieri and Qatar for four corvettes, an amphibious vessel and two patrol boats.

In June this year, the United States agreed a $12-billion sale of F-15 fighter jets to Qatar, re-affirming support for the emirate in the throes of the worst diplomatic crisis to hit the Gulf in decades.

Saudi Arabia and its allies including Egypt and the United Arab Emirates cut diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing Doha of backing extremist groups and being too close to Riyadh’s arch-rival Iran.

Qatar denies the allegations and accuses the Saudi-led bloc of imposing a “siege” on the tiny emirate.

The Qatari minister said Wednesday that the four Arab states had “showed no intention to resolve the crisis peacefully” at their last meeting on Sunday in Bahrain.

Alfano called for a de-escalation and a solution that shows “respect for international law”.

The Saudi-led bloc has demanded that Qatar close regional news giant Al-Jazeera and a Turkish military base, and downgrade its ties with Iran.

Doha has dismissed the demands as a violation of its sovereignty.

Egypt officially receives second Type 209 submarine from German TKMS

The Egyptian Navy received its second Type 209/1400 submarine, the S42, from German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems in a ceremony on Tuesday in Kiel.

After the delivery ceremony, S42 is expected to start its journey to Egypt in September.

The ceremony took place four months after Egypt welcomed its first submarine S41 to the naval base in Alexandria, on April 19.

S42 was launched in December 2016 as the second of four submarines TKMS is to build for the Egyptian Navy.

Egypt initially ordered two Type-209/1400mod submarines in 2011 and later ordered two more in 2014.

The HDW Class 209/1400mod submarine is the most recent version of the HDW Class 209 export “family”. TKMS currently has 14 navies on contract for the delivery of this type of submarines.

According to media reports, the contract for the first two boats was worth around 900 million euros while the contract for the second two submarines is estimated at well over 500 million Euro.

Egypt is acquiring the boats to replace its ageing Romeo-class submarines.

IMHO, they should buy some of the Harriers that will be retired with the F-35Bs coming on board to give them some fixed wing CAS too.
Those Harriers wouldn't only be retired but also tired. I cannot see Egypt setting up a maintenance organization for these old birds.

Italians and Spanish are not old build in 1990's can serve again easy 10 years also a part of USMC have same age and morever F-35B replace in first F-18 which have up to 30 years for A+/B less for C/D variants.

And to consider AV-8B less capable but for use F-35B expensive modifications are necessary with thermal coating.

Look it pushes hard ! 18.5 t vs 11 t...

Harrier is a painfully difficult aircraft to maintain. Only countries with large military budgets (like America, India and Britain) may be able to sustain the cost maintaining this aircraft. But truthfully ... this Harrier isn't aircraft for a country like Egypt. It would indeed become a huge liability than an asset for Egyptian Navy.
