US President Barack Obama told his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Saturday he wanted candid talks on thorny bilateral issues such as cyber security, human rights and maritime concerns. The leaders of the world’s two biggest economies were meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou.

China is keen to ensure a smooth G20 summit, its highest profile event of the year, as it looks to cement its global standing and avoid acrimony over a long list of tensions with Washington.

Obama, attending his last gathering of the world’s 20 major economies before stepping down in January, wants to stress the urgency of curbing global climate change and to urge other leaders to use fiscal policy to boost economic growth.

I agree with nearly 100% of what AFB posted about Pres. Obama. That stated I think this is once again the media making a big deal out of nothing. MANUFACTURING the news in other words.
I agree too. Media just try to get attention and magnifying the "confrontation between China and U.S." narrative for their pay masters.

It simply makes no sense and no gain for China to do such childish snub. Think about it, last time when Abe was at the APEC, he received handshake albeit a cold face from Xi. There is no reason for Obama to be treated much much worse and out of normal protocols.

One thing prevalent in a democracy is that the media (representing their masters) NOT ONLY defame foreign countries, BUT ALSO defame or make looking bad their domestic political rivals including their own president.

Woman : This is our plane. I'm standing under its wing.
Security Official: This is our country. This is our airport.

For this important event, China wants everything in order and flawless. They were trying to move them to a designated area as part of their security arrangement.

Poor guy.

Funny how the western media reporting have uniformly cut out the first statement from the American woman.

I agree this is all spin and nonsense. If anyone tried to barge through the Presidential security cordon in the US, I bet they get a lot more than a stiff talking to, press pass or no press pass.

I used to have some respect for journalists for their role in modern society and intellectual curiosity.

Personally speaking, I consider all White House correspondents lowliest of scumbags as none of them came out and told the truth whilst spinning the whole sorry thing into strategic proportions.

That woman is a White House press aide. Her attitude clearly showed American exceptionalism even on foreign soil, right underneath the very symbol of American power.
" Local rules don't apply to me".

That poor guy and his thankless job.

I'm hoping for the day when all foreigners come in with full acknowledgement that you must obey Chinese rules on Chinese soil, no questions asked.

I won't miss the chance to make a joke. If I were the security official, I'd say "the ground under the wing is still our country, I won't object your argument if you stand on the wheel of your plane."

On a serious note, China may be a special case in the world if not the only case where China has very strict restrictions on Foreign state activities on her soil. Or in other words very sensitive to these matters. These restrictions apply to both civilian security officials and military personells. For instance, US marines responsible for embassy security in Beijing are not allowed to ware their uniform visible to outside from the street meaning not in the court yard. I heard that Beijing US embassy is the only place in the world having such restrictions. That was one rule set when the diplomatic relation was established in 1976. I am not sure if it has ever loosened or not, but I am sure the principle is still in place. So the friction in Hangzhou is no surprise to me especially because Hangzhou is much less equipped to accommodate diplomatic demands.

I know this, upon arrival, the Chinese vlearly voiced their displeasure in how he was greeted.

Most US Presidents and other heads of state have the "red" carpet treatment rolled out with a special set of stairs rolled out to the entrance of the Presidential aircraft...like this:

This time, Obama had to use Air force One's own maintenance/auxillary stairs, and there were few there to greet him at all:

Pretty clear difference there...and it was no accident.

Sadly, IMHO< he has brought this on himself, and it reflects back on the entire nation.

Sad.

If you are implying Chinese gave him no rolling staircase to snub him on purpose, here is an article from South China Morning Post that explained what had transpired. Camelbird posted the link on the first page.

From the SCMP:
G20 ‘staircase snub’ for Obama was United States’ decision, reveals Chinese official

Here I'll quote the the entire article below for convenient reference.
One has to wonder why no White House correspondents came out and clarify things up. Professionals can't be excused for ignorance. It certainly smells like a well coordinated disinformation campaign to paint China's successful hosting of G20 event in the worst possible way that even Communist propaganda department would cry out in awe.
Where is journalistic integrity? I thought only the scumbags do such thing in public and in writing.
