I was reading a book on armor currently in use, and it appears that the North Koreans in reserve units still utilize the T-34. They also utilize the T-54/55, T-62, T-64, PT-76, Type 59, IS-2, M-2002, PT-85, Type 62, and the Ch'onma Ho. I believe they have 250+ T-34s, a handful of IS-2s and T-64s, 500+ Type 59s, 1,600 T-54/55s, an unknown quantity of PT-85s, 560 PT-76s, 800+ T-62s, a small number of M-2002s, 50+ Type 62s, and an unknown number of Ch'onma Hos. They have at least 3,800 tanks, definitely more than that, as the quantities for some models are unknown, and a couple may have numerous examples in service. However, how well they are maintained, the competence, intelligence, and training of their crews and their overall quality, as well as the quality of leadership and also unit morale factor in how pwerful the DPRK armor force is. I think that in many areas such forces can be found lacking as is typical in such countries. The armor force is outdated, with its most advanced tanks having 1980s technology, but most being from the 1930s to 1960s time period. Its main virtue is probably its size and the discipline of the crews. However, as was seen during both Persian Gulf Wars, modern, large tank forces can only have limited effectiveness without quality crews.
