New/Unknown Chinese SMG?

Hey there. I was looking around on one of my faveorite sites (Modern Firearms) which is, as far as I am aware, largely very acurate when it comes to details about firearms (although I imagine some might invariably have some issues with it. One never knows.) and I noticed something that I, as of yet, have not seen mentioned on Sino-Defence.

According to the site, the SMG is known officaly as the Chang Feng. It is named after the company that made the SMG (which is also aparently the same company that made the QSZ-92 (or at least the same designers). It was set up for trail for a compact submachine gun, but lost the bid due to it's technical complexity. It likely lost to continued manufacturing of the Type 85 or the at the time new Type 05.

The Chang Feng was a 5.8x21 DAP58 ammo in a Helical Magazine (Similar to the Bizon or Calico weapon systems.) in earlier versions, but also had a magazine in the handle in standard pistol configuration at the same time. How this configuration worked is not quite clear. In later versions, the handle-magazine was removed and the cartridge aparently changed to a 9x19 DAP92 load, the Chinese version of the 9MM Luger/Parabellum ammunition.

Despite it's failure to sell in the military market, the Chang Feng is aparently being sold to 'Police agencies' which may mean the PAP.

The article that features this weapon.

My questions are: Has anyone ever seen this weapon outside of this article? And two, has anyone even heard of this weapon before? Even if it does not officaly count, it would be nice to know if I could have provided some information to help this wonderful site get a full archive.

Thanks! And sorry if I am just reitterating something you guys already know.

ja, this is the new smg. which is using a ......weird magzine thingie....chinese police weapons are mostly from the military part, as type 54, 64, 77 pistol and type 64, 85 sub machine gun. so in recent years they are trying to develop some personal weaponaries designed for the police use. and we are seeing somehow type 92 9mm pistol (even though it's not an entirly police pistol), and this new revolver thingie, which everyone hates, and really to be in service in 1 or 2 years (which i personally think it's dumb, the high command must seen too many hongkong movie). and type 79 submachine gun was an example of military use submachine gun, which police found it veyr hard to use, for its high firing speed and limited rounds. they normally fired the whole mag without realizing it. and now they have a couple smg prototype in progress, one of them looks like a MP5. but i think the new smg for police won't be out for another 2, 3 years.

I must admit, the Helical magazines arent typicaly the best. High capacity, but it takes too long to reload and the magazines themselves are akward to carry. (Altough I have to disagree with one facet of the article. The magazines seem more similar to those used by the Bizon than the Calico.) Anyway...

Thanks for the info. If anyone else can provide anything not mentioned, it would be of help.

The design is very similiar to the Calico:

Original design of the helical, large capacity magazine was invented by the Michael Miller and Warren Stockton by the 1985, and refined by the 1988.

At one time it was actually legal to buy/own semi-auto Calico here in the US. I recall watching some weird B-rated movie where the actress was given a Calico pistol and told "this is a secret weapon, not even the government knows about it!". She proceeds to shoot about a dozen bad guys to death and the movie ended with some sex scene. LoL.

I have seen the Calico used in two movies and one television show to date, one move and the show eronous to it's use. The Substitue II, where it was profiled as an 'Armor Peircing' supergun, Robo-cop 2 (I think. It was ether that or three. The only one that used it as an SMG) and an episode of Walker: Texas Ranger where the carbine version was used as a Sniper Rifle. I have also seen it in at least one game: the rather mediocre Tresspasser videogame.

But again, I find it more similar to the Bizon in the magazine. Though the layout is more similar to the Calico.
