The name comes from the fact that profile on it's a very close match to the Abrams save that Abrams has 7 road wheels and is a little longer, a little wider and a little taller. K1 was designed with impute from Crysler Defence now General Dynamics Land Systems who also as you can guess designed the M1 Abrams K1 differsdfrom her big American sisters though with a conventional power pack vs the Abrams gas turbine, and is a 55 ton tank vs the 60 of the M1. Like M1 both started with a 105mm rifled main gun. The Koreans like the US have since introduced a A1 version with a L44 120mm smooth bore. And a K1A2 borrowing tech from the K2
Babrams... I am not sure translates very well in Korean.

Licensed and that was the K1 in the 80's K2 is far more Korean. Besides the Chinese can't openly sell Military equipment to the NK sanctions and money.

Most tanks have NBC protection Suposedly the ZTZ99 does to. And I would hope Air conditioning. Tanks with out AC have a way of being Ovens in the heat and Meat lockers in the cold.

A question does any one know what is going on at the bottom of the Turret? a turret floor for the crew or just foot rests with space for the Turret monster to eat as it pleases?

AFAIK the K1A1 does use the M256 instead of the german L44. (not exactly the same gun), furthermore if we talk about initial version the M1 weighed around 55tons while the K1 was in the 50 to 51ton range.

South Koreans overly rely on American technology for indigenous tank development. Even it's barrel is entirely German tech.

How many millimeters of rolled steel armor can a single tactical nuke penetrate? It seems NK doesn't need to adopt Chinese MBT tech when it can just bulldoze entire tank formations of SK with tactical nukes.

Depends on the size of nukes, but my guess is that most of the tanks in huge tank armies won´t actually be pulverized by the explosion, but rather they will flip because of the huge shockwave.
And also i might add that norks probably still have rather small yields that they can conviniently transport on SRBMs.

Nukes are of limited threat to tanks. What will really threaten SK tanks are NK’s artillery.

No tank can survive lofted heavy artillery rounds dripping on them like top attack munitions.

Let's get real. Any use of tactical nukes or any nukes on any scale will result in an overwhelming response from USA and allies. NK cannot use nukes if their leadership wants to avoid certain death.

Lets get even more "real" the US and it's allies can NEVER regime change North Korea with conventional or nuclear warfare without hurting themselves.o_O

Yeah but the tank or crew might be cripple to some extent no longer combat effective.
It takes a lot to get a 50-60 ton vehicle to move enough to generate the G forces needed to actually hurt the crew. MBT especially of the Third generation in the last decade have been retrofit or built new with lots of shock absorption systems to mediate impacts on the crew.
From the seating to the clothing worn. Tank crews have survived roll overs and near direct hits with high caliber artillery.
Tanks of Russian/Warsaw pact design have there crews fight sealed up inside there tanks, Ztz99's Hatches seem to be following that design, I base this on the way the hatch sits when open and that the commanders have been seen placing the open hatch forward in combat that can allow the commander to sit raised in the turret and use the hatch as makeshift body armor covering there chest.
Western Tanks are a little different on that commanders placing more of an emphasis on situational awareness and only sealing for NBC but the hatches of the Turrets are designed with three modes open, low protected where the hatch sits raised but over the opening and the TC can look out around him. The hatch being designed not to fall or swing around accidentally depending on design, and closed.
In both cases though the aim is to limit the amount of secondary fragmentation from entering the fighting compartment.
Really because of the armor levels and fact that MBT are taking there design linage from the era of the cold war where these tanks were supposed to be dealing with the potential of a nuclear level shock wave and over pressure, short of a direct hit driving over a massive bomb or a near blast of a even more massive bomb I just don't think it's really going to get the Tank in a position where it is no longer able to fight. And under artillery the best defense for the Tank crew is speed. Unless you are raining down Railway gun artillery a miss is not likely to knock out the tank. a direct hit on a tank from over 20 miles is a literal long shot.

Actually the KM256 a license of the M256 which is a Licenced production of the L44.

I really do not want to veer of too much on that topic and i am "sorry" for this, but the M256 just builds upon the German L44 Technology, its however not a licence copy...recoil mechanism is different, breech is bigger on L44, Bore evacuator and thermal shroud also differ from each other, though ofcourse ammo is interchangeable, though not the gun.
